VALLETTA, MALTA: 6 - 8 November 2003
The Islands and Small States Institute of the University of Malta will be organising an international conference
on sustainability indicators between 6 and 8 November 2003. The conference is intended for scholars and
practitioners in the field. The conference will be conducted in the English language (see tentative programme).
Themes of the Conference Sessions
The themes to be covered include
1. Purpose, coverage and applicability of sustainability indicators
2. Methodology of constructing sustainability indicators
3. Sustainability indicators in the Mediterranean region
4. Sustainability indicators and small islands
5. International agencies/organisations promoting sustainability indicators
6. Sustainable development paths
Papers on these and related themes are welcome.
It is not necessary to present a paper to attend the conference.
Registration Fee
The registration fee for participants is US$500 covering:
 Attendance and participation at the conference
 Conference documentation
 Hotel accommodation half board for four days
 Refreshments during breaks
 Lunches on the three days of the conference
 Farewell dinner
 A social programme, including a welcome reception and excursion with guide
 Transfers to and from hotel-airport and hotel-conference venue.
The fee for accompanying partners, sharing a room with participant, is US$150.
Call for Papers and Deadline for Submission
Those wishing to present a paper are requested to send an abstract of the paper (not exceeding 300 words)
and a bionote (not exceeding 150 words) by not later than 20 October 2003. The full text of the paper (about
6000 words) should be submitted by 31 October 2003. Papers and abstracts should, as much as possible, be in
line with the guidelines of style (accessed from http://www.um.edu.mt/intoff/si-mo/si_conference.doc). Please
fill the form attached if you wish to present a paper.
Method and Deadline for Registration
Those wishing to attend should fill in the registration form (accessed from http://www.um.edu.mt/intoff/simo/si_conference.doc). Applications are to be accompanied by payment to be accepted. Deadline for submission
of application is 20 October 2003. If payment is effected after that date, there may be an additional charge of
$50 to cover administration expenses.
Publishing of Proceedings
The papers will be refereed and those accepted for publication will be posted on the site of the Malta
Observatory for Sustainability Indicators http://www.um.edu.mt/intoff/si-mo. The organisers also plan to publish
a book with a selection of the papers.

Guidelines of Style For Papers to be Submitted for Presentations at the
International Conference on Sustainability Indicators
Valletta, Malta, 6 and 8 November 2003
Documents to be submitted
The documents to be submitted are
(1) the paper itself (including diagrams and tables) (about 6000 words)
(2) an abstract of the paper (Maximum 300 words)
(3) A bio-note about (150 words)
The text of the three documents should also be saved on diskette, and mailed with the printed copy.
The preferred software package is Word for Windows.
All documents and diskettes are to be sent to Professor Lino Briguglio, Islands and Small States

Spelling
Spelling should be consistent throughout the paper and, preferably (not necessarily) in accordance
with the English Oxford Dictionary.
Title Page

The title page should contain the following text, all centred:

THE MAIN HEADING (Bold, uppercase, 16 pt)

Name/s of author/s and affiliation/s (Bold, title case i.e. upper & lower case, 14 pt)


STYLE
Headings

Main heading: Centred, bold, uppercase 14 pt - skip 2 lines after heading.

Primary headings. Centred, bold, title case, 12 pt. Skip a line after heading.

Secondary headings. Left range, title case, italic, 11 pt. Skip a line after heading.

Tertiary headings. Left range, Sentence case, italic, run-on (i.e. followed by a full stop
and run-on with the first sentence of the paragraph, 10 pt.
Citations
Citations to the literature (books, journals, etc.) should be identified in the main text of the paper by
the name of the author and year of publication as in the following example: (Brown 1994: 12-14)
where the numbers following the colon refer to page numbers, and are optional. If the name of the
author appears within the sentence just put the date of the publication in brackets as in the following
example: ..... Brown (1988). If there are more than three authors, use et al. e.g. (Green et al.,
1987).
References
The cited literature should be listed in alphabetical order by author, in a separate section at the end
of the paper, under the title References. The following are examples of how the entries in the
References section should be entered:

When the same single author appears more than once, the earliest dated references goes first. When
the same author appears more than once with other authors, references are to be list in the
following order 1. single author; 2. two authors; 3. three or more authors.
Footnotes
Footnotes should be avoided if possible. If it is necessary to include footnotes these should be
referred to in the main text by a super-scripted number. Footnotes are to be consecutively
numbered.
Tables and Diagrams
Tables and diagrams can (but not necessarily) be presented on separate sheets, in which case
authors should indicate the places where they are to be inserted in the text. They are to be
consecutively numbered. Diagrams should also be consecutively numbered and should be presented
in the form of line drawings with a professional appearance. All diagrams will be reproduced in black
and white. Headings of Tables and Diagrams are to be Centred and Bold as follows: Table 1: GDP
between 1999 and 2002
Abstract of Paper
An abstract not exceeding 300 words (excluding the title) is to be submitted on a separate single
sheet, using single line spacing. The abstract should take the following format:

Name of Conference, place and date

Title of paper and name/s and affiliation/s of author/s

Text of abstract, which should preferably contain:
1. a brief description of the theme of the paper;
2. a brief summary of the main arguments in the body of the paper; and
3. a brief summary of the conclusion/s.
