Abstract:
Root sections of leafy spurge, Euphorbia esula, were collected from nine locations in the United States
and Canada and grown in the greenhouse at Bozeman, Montana. Material from each location was
referred" to as a strain. Differences between strains were noted in leaf size and shape and in root
characteristics. All plants appeared to fit the botanical description for Euphorbia esula, with the
possible exception of the Canadian strain which may be a E.esula X Ehcy-parissias cross. When all
strains were treated With -2,4-D amine at 0.25, 0.5 and 1.0 pound per acre rates, and evaluated by
visual means, different strains appeared to exhibit varying levels of tolerance to this herbicide. As the
rate per acre of 2,4-D was increased, differential results were not. as pronounced. Gibberellic acid’
stimulated the growth of all strains when applied both as a soil and as a foliage treatment. Those strains
most susceptible to 2,4-D applications appeared to also be most responsive to growth stimulation by
gibberellic acid. When gibberellic acid was used as a pretreatment' to 2,4-D appli cations, no apparent
advantage was realized. In studies of leaf characteristics little difference was found in the cuticle
thickness between strains. Stomata numbers varied both within and between strains. Neither the cuticle
thickness or the number of stomata appeared to be important in the 2,4-D response obtained. By
lengthening the photoperiod and subjecting the semi-dormant plants to periods of cold temperatures,
increased growth was observed.
