Research programs foster the interests of individuals and groups and promote the scientific community at large. Research projects include studies by individual faculty, as well as interdisciplinary programs, which combine the interests of College faculty with those from other academic units of the University of Washington. Graduate Program Areas Master of Science (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD ) Degree Options Forest Economics emphasizes economic theory, together with applications to management and use of forest resources, public and private resource policy, the forest products industry, environmental regulation, resource planning and international resource development and trade. Forest Ecosystem Analysis covers a broad spectrum of topics in forest biology and environmental science. Diverse fields of study include: aquatic-terrestrial interactions, conservation biology, ecological modeling, ecological restoration, ecophysiology, ecosystem studies, entomology, fire ecology, forest community ecology, genetics, global climate change, landscape ecology, paleoecology, and pathology. Forest Engineering and Hydrology focuses on the analysis and design of forest management activities at the watershed scale to produce the multiple forest resources of timber, wildlife, fish, recreation, and water. Social Sciences studies the social aspects of natural resources. Study areas include community forestry and rural development, land use planning, natural and environmental resources policy and law, public administration and decision making, social and economic impact assessment, and recreation management and leisure studies. Urban Horticulture is concerned with the functional uses and management of plants in urban environments for the benefit of people who live there. Study areas include environmental horticulture, urban forestry, public horticulture, horticulture education and interpretation, horticultural taxonomy, landscape plant selection, plant ecology, and plant physiology and molecular biology. Wildlife Science draws from the natural, quantitative, and social sciences to focus on the basic ecology of vertebrate species and a wide range of issues dealing with management and conservation of species and ecosystems, including problems in forest management, wildlife toxicology, range management, and marine mammalogy. Forest Products Marketing provides the opportunity to view the forest products industry from a marketing orientation that focuses on the customer. Dramatic changes in resource quality and timber availability have complicated the competitive environment facing the industry, which historically has relied on a production-oriented management philosophy emphasizing the cost-efficient production of commodities. Silviculture is designed for working professionals and offers opportunities for post- Forest Soils covers many aspects of soil science and environmental studies such as graduate study in current topics and concepts in silviculture, forest protection, and related fields. forest resources, restoration, and waste applications. Fields of study include management of forest soils, biosolids applications, soil chemistry, pedology, soil microbiology or biogeochemical cycling. Paper Science and Engineering covers areas of interest that span raw materials, pulping, bleaching, papermaking and recycling. Specializations are polymer and fiber science, pulp and paper engineering, and wood chemistry. Quantitative Resources Management focuses on the application of quantitative techniques to the management of forest lands, such as probability theory, statistical methods, information systems, operations research/management science, and forest management/ economics. Silviculture and Forest Protection involves knowledge of the biological and physical factors influencing the production and maintenance of forests as well as their protection from insects, diseases, fire, competing vegetation, and other natural and human factors. Applied ecology and biology topics include regeneration practices, stand development, intermediate stand management prescriptions and practices, and management of disturbance effects. Professional Master of Forest Resources (MFR) Degree Options Urban Horticulture is designed for mid-career and developing professionals to provide training for careers related to the management of vegetation in urban areas. 13 Graduate Scholarships and Fellowships Awarded 1998-99 Achievement Rewards for College Scientist (ARCS) Sara Jensen, Ruth Marsh Agnes H.
