Gregory V. Jones, Ph.D. Southern Oregon University Department of Geography 1250 Siskiyou Blvd. Ashland, OR 97520 Monday, November 1, 2004 Annual Report – FY 2004 Task Agreement: J9W88040020 Cooperative Agreement: CA9088A0008 Project Title: Geographical Information System (GIS) and Spatial Analysis Support for the Klamath Network Inventory and Monitoring Program GIS Specialist: Andrew Duff 1) Major activities undertaken The GIS specialist has begun to work with network and park staff (Parks involved CRLA, LABE, LAVO, ORCA, REDW, and WHIS) to compile critical data layers from the parks, the states of California and Oregon, and field inventories. Andrew coauthored portions of the Phase I Inventory and Monitoring Report including sections on rare and endangered species, marine resources, and subterranean features. He was also responsible for all aspects of cartographic map design for the report. Additionally, the project design for bat inventories for three national parks in northern California and southern Oregon was developed; Andrew obtained necessary scientific collecting permits to conduct the survey, hired Student Conservation Association staff, and completed the first year of data collection. 2) GIS Data Structure Planning, Design, and Initial Data Collection • The GIS specialist tasks included evaluating several file structure designs for data storage at the network office and selecting the I & M suggested structure for GIS data. Work has began to collect copies of park level GIS databases and migrate selected layers applicable to inventory and monitoring into a parallel I & M file structure, conforming to NPS standards. Additionally, existing regional and national GIS datasets were collected including the GAP Analysis program, Tiger Census Data, and the National Hydrography Dataset. Assistance with compilation of non-native species maps was provided and spatial analysis in support of the FY 04 bat inventory was conducted. 3) Major scientific or educational presentations • Andrew will be presenting “Bat distribution in the Klamath Network of National Parks” to the Klamath Network Board of Directors Meeting, in Ashland, OR December 2004 4) Bat Inventory Dr. Thomas Morrell and Andrew Duff submitted a final project report for the FY 02-03 Inventories on October 15, 2004. During FY04, Andrew developed the project design for bat inventories for three national parks in northern California and southern Oregon using live capture and acoustical techniques. He obtained necessary scientific collecting permits to conduct the survey from California Department of Fish and Game and Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, CRLA, ORCA, and REDW. Additionally, he hired Student Conservation Association staff Dustin Lavarack to assist with the project. The first year’s inventory ran from August to mid October, yielding 4 species in 11 trap nights in CRLA, 5 species in 4 trap nights at ORCA, and 8 species in 12 trap nights at REDW. Acoustical samples are under analysis and an annual report will be due by February 2005. Scheduled FY05 Activities and Products; include but are not limited to: a) The GIS Specialist will assess and inventory all network GIS data, collect new data layers, and work to migrate selected park level datasets into network specifications. b) Continue developing GIS data layers for all inventories funded by the Klamath Network and begin collecting and processing remote sensing datasets. c) Work with the network data manager to develop tabular database technologies. d) Present presentations at scientific meetings and coordinate training opportunities for network and park staff. e) Provide geospatial instructional support and collaborative interactions with SOU students and faculty.
