Whether you’re new to Eastern or a seasoned veteran,
the Graduate School welcomes you for the Fall 2012
semester! Returning students will notice major
changes to the Graduate School website. If you
haven’t enrolled yet, you can still register for classes;
the last date to add classes with departmental
authorization is October 26.
Use the Graduate School website to help navigate
your graduate experience. Locate graduate
assistantships, financial assistance, program
information and advisors, research information, and
more!
If you’re new to campus, make sure to check out the
numerous on-campus events offered through campus
life. Campus life events are a great way to meet other
students and to become more involved in the EMU
community. If you plan to commute to campus, make
sure you have a parking hang tag. Commuter hang
tags must be displayed on the rear view mirror by
September 14, 2012. The “park-free and ride” option is
available again this year. Students can park for free at
the Rynearson Park and Ride Lot. More information
can be found on the parking website.

Attend a New Graduate Assistant library orientation, and with your new
understanding of the library’s tools and services you will be a more effective
student/researcher/instructor.
• Quickly find the librarian subject specialist who can provide assistance with your
quests to discover and locate relevant resources.
• Our new Esearch database is a multidisciplinary search tool that is like a
localized version of Google Scholar.
• Many databases now provide help citing the articles you discover using common
bibliographic styles, such as APA, MLA.
• Zotero is a no-cost reference manager that can help you build your own database
of references and can assist you in citing those references in a wide range of
bibliographic styles.

Graduate Council
The Graduate Council is a body of faculty who support
all aspects of graduate education at EMU. The council
meets once a month to discuss current graduate
education and provide recommendations to the director
of the Graduate School. The new chair of the Graduate
Council is Dr. Marcia (Marti) Bombyk, faculty member
in the School of Social Work and consulting editor of
the Journal of Progressive Human Services.

The Graduate School Welcomes:
Dr. Michael McVey
New Faculty Associate
The newest staff member at the Graduate School
is Dr. Michael McVey. He comes to us from the
College of Education, where he was recently
awarded tenure and where he serves as the
graduate coordinator for the Educational Media
and Technology (EDMT) program.
Dr. McVey began his career in education
teaching special education and English in
Canada. He has an interest in International
Education and taught for a year in Japan. He
completed his doctoral degree at Northern
Arizona University in Educational Leadership.
Dr. McVey began working as a faculty associate
in the Graduate School at the beginning of
August. As he has been learning the ropes of
the office, he has been working on projects
including the new website and a pilot program
for improving teaching skills for graduate
students and teaching assistants.

The newest Graduate Assistant for the
Graduate School is Ms. Sarah Ashley Greer.
Ashley completed her bachelor’s in
Psychology and African American Studies at
the University of Michigan, where she was
also a member of the Women’s Track and
Field team.
