Graduate Research Fair
Monday, March 18, 2013
EMU Student Center
Present your research at the 15th Annual Graduate
Research Fair on Monday, March 18, 2013! Our goal is
to have at least one presenter from every department and
school. Help us make it a success!
Important Deadlines
January 18, 2013
Presenter application deadline
150-word abstract
February 15, 2013
Scholarship consideration deadline
March 8, 2013
Reception RSVP deadline
March 13, 2013
PowerPoint submission deadline
Information you need to know when you apply
Before applying, be sure to have a faculty mentor(s) with whom you will work to finalize your presentation. The
form will ask for his/her name and email address. We will email him/her to seek approval of your presentation.
Without the approval, you will NOT be scheduled to present. Have a conversation before submission so that our
email request for support will not be surprising.
You will need a title for your presentation – don’t make it too long. Prepare the presentation abstract, which
needs to be at most 150 words – PLEASE BE BRIEF!
Groups may present their work as a team. One member will be the point person and will provide a contact phone
number for the group. That person will complete the online application and enter information about each
presenter. Be sure to have the correct spelling of all names – these will go into the program, be on the website,
and be printed on nametags and certificates of participation. We will also need emails for each presenter.
Have all of this information handy before you start the online application form.
The event presentations will begin this year at noon. Oral presentation sessions (4 presenters for each session)
will be @ 12:00-1:15 p.m., 1:30-2:45 p.m., 3:00-4:15 p.m., and 5:45-7:00 p.m. The poster sessions will run @
1:15-2:30 p.m. and 3-4:15 p.m. There will be a Reception and Awards Ceremony from 4:30-5:30 p.m. The
Sigma Xi speaker, Professor Donald C. Beitz, will begin at 7:00 p.m.
Submit your presenter application online at http://commons.emich.edu/grf/2013/
Winter Workshops
offered by the Faculty Development Center
Creating Free Google Docs Surveys Workshop
January 24, 1:00-2:30 pm in Halle 110
January 29, 9:00-10:30 am in Halle 11
January 30, 3:00-4:30 pm in Halle 111
(All graduate students welcome)
Led by Kelly Frisch, GA
Google forms are a useful tool to help you plan events, send a survey, give students a quiz, or
collect other information in an easy, streamlined way. A Google form is automatically
connected to a spreadsheet with the same title. When you send or share a form, recipients’
responses will anonymously be collected in that spreadsheet. This tool can automatically
summarize your data into graphs/tables.
SPSS I Winter Workshop (All graduate students welcome)
February 5 or 6
9:00-11:00 a.m. in 110 Halle Library
Led by Professor Joe Scazzero
This "hands-on" workshop is for faculty and staff who have never used or feel out-of-date with
the statistics package SPSS. The menu-driven system of the Windows version of SPSS 18 will
be demonstrated for performing common tasks such as: entering data into SPSS, creating
variable and value labels, computer new variables, recording values, running selected
statistical procedures, and saving data and output files. The SPSS I Workshop will cover the
basics of this package.
SPSS II Winter Workshop (All graduate students welcome)
February 12 or 13
9:00-11:00 a.m. in 110 Halle Library
Led by Professor Joe Scazzero
This "hands-on" workshop is for faculty and staff who want to know how to create and use
syntax files for the statistics package SPSS 18 for Windows. The SPSS II Workshop will cover
selected advanced features and syntax files. Syntax files are text files that allow the user to run
programs on a SPSS data file. The advantages of using syntax files rather than menu-driven
systems will be discussed and demonstrated during the workshop.
