3-on-3 Basketball Rules
I.
Eligibility
All participants are subject to Intramural Sports Eligibility Rules, which are available in the
Intramural Sports Participant Handbook.
II.
Game, Players and Equipment
1. Games are self-officiated. The participants call fouls.
2. A match shall consist of best 2-out-of-3 games. The first 2 games are played to 13
points, win by two, with a cap at 15 points. The third and deciding game shall be played
straight to 11 points.
3. Games start on the hour and teams have 30 minutes to play the best 2-out-of-3 games.
At 30 minutes after, a whistle will be blown and the game will be over.
4. If the game is tied after 30 minutes, first team to get a one-basket lead wins the contest.
5. No time-outs.
6. Teams consist of three (3) players. Teams may start and continue the game with two (2)
players. Six (6) players MAX on roster.
7. Ex-Varsity players are NOT allowed to play this sport.
8. Substitutions may only enter after a made basket, or dead ball.
9. Teams must bring their own basketball. Teams will agree on a game ball. If teams
cannot decide on a game ball, the supervisor will determine the game ball.
10. NO Dunking before or after the game!!!
III.
Scoring
1. Baskets made from inside the 3-point arc are worth one (1) point; baskets made from
outside the 3-point arc are worth two (2) points.
IV.
Possession
1. The ball must be cleared past the 3-point line on ALL possession changes.
2. Ball possession to start a game will be determined by a coin toss / ro-sham-bo.
V.
Fouls
1. No free throws or fouling out.
2. On a foul, the ball is put into play at the top of the key, with a check.
VI.
Sportsmanship
1. All players are expected to play with good sportsmanship and uphold the spirit of
Intramural Sports.
2. Self-Officiate with sportsmanship & class. Please respect your opponent(s) at ALL
times and call a fair game to ensure a quality recreational experience for everyone
involved.
3. If a game becomes heated/physical and the participants are unable to call fouls
properly, the game will be called by the supervisor and both teams will be eliminated
from further play.
4. The Supervisor on duty will rate each team after each contest on sportsmanship.
