WORDS FROM THE PROVOSTS OFFICE
1. Why don't we have more undergraduate students? Provost's Office can't understand
this.
2. Academic profiling - university knows a lot about us because of the UW relational
data base (see handout)
3. Efficiency - too many small classes (room for basic housekeeping)
A. We could teach some courses more often
4. Innovation - SRS, Sustainability - interesting because they attract people outside of
forestry - "innovations from the periphery"
5. Interdisciplinary activities are favored Art/Architecture, Cinema studies
Urban Ecology Initiative (Marzluff, Ryan, etc) looked upon favorably
6. We are encouraged to use Tools for Transformation and UIF processes (We have
done well with Tools for Transformation)
7. Enrollment Planning is being conducted across 3 campuses - balance of
grads/undergrads - sense of urgency (months)
8. Accountability (HEC board)
a. We should increase our undergrad majors by at least 100
b. We could also get smaller and focus on particular areas
c. We will be judged on SCH (service courses - contribution to non- majors) and
numbers of majors (50/50?)
