Erin Hagen
Doctoral student, wildlife science
Committee Chair:
Dave Manuwal
Hagen is working with the Chilean government to learn more about the bird’s dramatic decline and to develop
conservation plans. Findings so far suggest that causes include predation by introduced mammals, loss of
habitat, and competition with a co-occurring species, the green-backed firecrown, which arrived from continental
Chile in the late 19th century. Hagen’s work on the island reflects her interest in invasive species roles’ in native
ecosystems, island ecology and conservation, and the development of community environmental stewardship.
She says “Although my focus is now on this tiny island in the middle of the Pacific that most people have never
heard of, its conservation challenges are mirrored worldwide.” This year Hagen was awarded the UW’s Huckabay
Teaching Fellowship, awarded to nine graduate students from across the UW each year.

COLLEGE PROFILE
•Established in 1907 as one of the oldest units on the University of Washington campus and one of the original
natural resource programs in the country, our vision is to provide world class, internationally recognized
knowledge and leadership for environmental and natural resource issues.
•College teaching, research, and outreach programs focus on the integrating theme of sustainability in natural and
managed environments that include wilderness and park-like ecosystems, intensively managed planted forests,
and urban ecosystems.
•Our academic niche at the University of Washington is to study the key principles and processes that explain the
behavior and interaction of biotic and social systems along gradients from urban to wildland settings.
•We study human-influenced natural resource and environmental systems through an interdisciplinary approach
in collaboration with our campus and external partners.
Our graduates are leaders in natural resources and public and private land management throughout the
state, the region, and the nation. The management of natural resources for products and environmental services
is vital to political, social, and economic decisions made every day by leaders and citizens and is a key element
in our state and regional economy. As faculty members in universities throughout the country, our graduates are
educating the next generation of leaders in natural resources and environmental issues.
Our faculty research topics of regional and global importance, including fire ecology, ecological restoration,
invasive and endangered species, urban sustainability, global warming, forest productivity, and pulp and paper
processing, and natural resources policy. Committed to the integration of teaching and research, they provide
students with real-world experience and hands-on learning in our region’s urban-to-wildland laboratory.
Our academic programs use the array of biological-social interactions in the Pacific Northwest as
a learning environment for problem-based, interdisciplinary inquiry. We offer undergraduate programs in
environmental science and resource management (ESRM) and paper science and engineering (PSE). Graduate
study areas include environmental horticulture and urban forestry, forest ecology, forest soils, forest systems
and bioenergy, paper science and engineering, restoration ecology, social sciences, sustainable resource
management, and wildlife science.
Our outreach and technical transfer programs provide knowledge and training focusing on international
trade in forest products, precision forestry, regional natural resources, urban ecosystems, and environmental
horticulture.
Our partnerships include formal interdisciplinary links across campus as well as collaborations with academic
institutions, federal, state, and local governments, industry, and Native American natural resources managers.

Majors
The College offers two undergraduate majors leading to the Bachelor of Science in Forest Resources degree,
Environmental Science and Resource Management and Paper Science and Engineering. Scholarship support is
widely available in both majors; nearly one-quarter of the College’s students receive scholarships each year. Both
majors provide opportunities for internships, international study, and undergraduate research. An honors program is
available in both majors.
The Environmental Science and Resource Management (ESRM) major gives students interested in learning
about natural and human-dominated landscapes a broad, flexible undergraduate science degree with an opportunity
to select one of four program options or to design their own upper-division coursework..
• ESRM is an open major (any student can declare).
• ESRM is transfer friendly.
• ESRM allows for over 50 free electives.
• ESRM offers four transcripted options— wildlife conservation; landscape ecology and conservation; sustainable
forest management; and restoration ecology and environmental horticulture — or students can design their own
upper-division coursework.
• ESRM can easily combine with minors and double degrees.
The Paper Science and Engineering (PSE) major is designed for students seeking training in chemical and
physical sciences and chemical engineering as applied to manufacturing fiber products, fuels, and chemicals from
biomass resources. It emphasizes the application of mathematics, chemistry, and engineering to paper and related
bioresources-based industries.
•PSE is an engineering program accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, 111 Market
Place, Suite 1050, Baltimore, MD 21202-4012 - telephone: (410) 347-7700.
•PSE provides extensive faculty contact and active student groups.
•A 5th year double degree option with Chemical Engineering is available.
Minors
The College offers two minors: Environmental Science and Resource Management (ESRM) and Streamside Studies.

OUTREACH overview
The College offers outreach services through its interdisciplinary centers, providing a broad array of continuing
education, professional development, technology transfer, and public education programs. Many events are
accredited by professional organizations such as the Society of American Foresters. Outreach and research
centers of the College each develop their own calendar of activities. They also coordinate to sponsor College-wide
events, such as the Denman Forestry Issues Series, under the direction of the Outreach Steering Committee.
For outreach events currently offered by the College and its centers, check the events calendar and the Links to
College Outreach Resources.

by more desserts, wine tasting, and the silent auction. We’re starting a little earlier this year, so there will be plenty
of time for people to attend the formal program and still have time for fun and socializing before catching their bus
home. Please start thinking about acknowledging the excellence of the people with whom you work and study.
Nominate a colleague for a staff award.
Email your nominations to cece@washington.edu.
Nominate a graduate student for a TA/RA Award by sending an email to Jeff Aken following
the format below:
For the Annual CFR recognition event on May 24th we would like to recognize the outstanding Teaching and
Research Assistants in the College. We are soliciting nominations for individuals who have excelled in this
arena during their graduate studies. Please address these three points as why you are nominating them and email
it to me by May 22nd.
1: Excelled in their work, whether it be teaching or research.
2: Provided extraordinary service to the college above and beyond their job descriptions
3: Demonstrated unusual resourcefulness, initiative, teamwork and problem solving skills.
Thanks! There is a lot of great work being done in the college by our graduate students and this is the opportunity
to recognize some of those people, so please take a moment to send me an email.
Enter the fact sheet competition.
Email your fact sheet entry to cece@washington.edu.
Enter the Dessert Contest
Just in case you needed another good reason to attend the CFR Recognition Event on May 24th, we are having
our annual DESSERT CONTEST! To enter, just bring a dessert (large enough for most to try...), cut up into bitesize pieces, with a descriptive tent sign/label. Each dessert will be assigned a number and people will be able to
vote for their top three. The winner will receive a gift certificate to Mrs. Cooks in U Village!
