“Navigating the Tangled Bank:
Environmental Impacts on
Ecological Networks”
Dr. Timothy Wootton
Professor
Department of Ecology
and Evolution
University of Chicago
How do ecosystems respond to environmental impacts such as extinctions, changes in
disturbance regime, or alternations in geochemical processes? Answering this question
is essential to addressing human impacts on the environment, but is challenging
because of the complex network of species interactions in nature. I will present an
overview of my research seeking to answer this question in experimentally tractable
“model” ecosystems, and describe how this work has led to our ongoing investigations
into rapid pH decline along the coast of Washington.
