Answering this question is essential to addressing human impacts on the environment, but is challenging because of the complex network of species interactions in nature. I will present an overview of my research seeking to answer this question in experimentally tractable “model” ecosystems, and describe how this work has led to our ongoing investigations into rapid pH decline along the coast of Washington.
