Hopefully, by Friday these will have been approved. • Six campus-wide committees have been assembled to review the Activity Based Budgeting (ABB) model. • Campus Technology Group wants to levy a “tax” of between $55-85 per faculty and staff members because they are facing a deficit. Robert Winglee has made an analysis of this proposal and its impact on his unit, Earth and Space Sciences. We have far more staff that ESS so the impact on us would be much more than ESS. If faculty would like a copy of Dr. Winglee’s analysis, please let Dr. Hinckley know. • Name change? Dr. Hinckley got feedback from Provost’s office which he will send out. Faculty suggested that the list be reevaluated by only the faculty in hopes that a new list that has more inclusions of the word forest in them be determined. Dr. Hinckley will send out the Provost’s feedback and the process by which we will proceed. PRESENTATIONS • Kern Ewing provided information about the Union Bay Natural Area and Shoreline Management Guidelines, 2009. When David Mabberley was UWBG Director a master plan was commissioned and completed. At that time the Union Bay Natural Area was not included. Dean Bare supported the completion of this plan. The draft plan has been posted online for about a year. Comments from a wide assortment of people have been solicited and received. Sandra Lie, as current UWBG Director, wants the faculty to approve the plan. The plan includes inventory of types of areas and the needs of each area including staffing. An inventory of the size determined that the UBNA is 74-75 acres. Faculty wondered if there is a need for volunteers. There is a two quarter RA position that does volunteer coordination for classes. There are actually plenty of volunteers but a full time coordinator is needed. There has been an active discussion with the “birders.” What do birders want that isn’t there? Birders see it as a wilderness area and we see it as a reclaimed landfill that requires active management. Birders are opposed to trails but travel in places where trails go. Birders want open areas, but we want diversity in the areas. All grassland was a suggestion. This is very difficult to manage because blackberries are so invasive. The shorebird enthusiasts are outspoken. One project improving shorebird habitat has been completed. The Management Guidelines will come before the faculty for approval. Faculty are requested to review the plan before the vote. Any safety issues? Sightlines, blue telephones, and posting signs have been suggested by the UW Police. Unfortunately there is no funding for the phones. By clearing the blackberries we no longer have “campers” staying in the area. If faculty approve then what happens next? Looking for small private funding sources. Grant money hasn’t worked in the past. DISCUSSION • No discussions are scheduled. FACULTY ACTIONS • Proposed Affiliate Professor Appointment Jerry Franklin moved and Rob Harrison seconded the motion that the faculty approve Daniel Underwood, Ph.D. as Affiliate Professor. This appointment is sponsored by Jerry Franklin. Dr. Underwood received his Ph.D. in Environmental and Natural Resource Economics from the University of Utah in 1986. He is a Professor at Peninsula College in Port Angeles, Washington and has been actively involved with research and providing lectures for the past 10 years. The faculty voted to approve this appointment. The results of the vote are on file in the Director’s office. UPCOMING EVENTS • The next Faculty Meeting will be on Tuesday, February 2, 2010 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in Anderson Hall Room 22. • There will be an all School meeting on February 25, 2010 at 3:30 p.m. in the Forest Club Room.
