FACULTY ACTIONS

Proposed Post-Doctoral Research Associate Appointment
Jon Bakker moved and Bruce Bare seconded the motion that the faculty approve Ryan Haugo for Post-Doctoral
Research Associate effective Dec 16, 2010 through August 31, 2011. This appointment is sponsored by Dr. Jon
Bakker. Ryan is currently a Ph.D. student in SFR, and is scheduled to defend his dissertation on December 7,
2010. Thi s offer, therefore, is conditional on his completion of all requirements for the Ph.D. degree by
December 15, 2010. Ryan will be supported primarily by Jon Bakker’s grant from the Joint Fire Science
Program. Ryan’s research interests and experience in the sagebrush steppe ecosystem are strong assets to this project, the objective of which is to understand the effects of recurring fires in the shrub steppe ecosystems of eastern Washington. He will also assist Dr. Charlie Halpern with some analyses. This will be a 100% FTE appointment. Ryan will be housed at the Center for Urban Horticulture, where he will have office space. He will also have full access to Dr. Bakker’s lab space. The faculty voted to approve this appointment. The results of the vote are on file in the Director’s Office.
DEAN’S PRESENTATION AND DISCUSSION
Dean Lisa Graumlich provided overarching comments about the budget and other issues, followed by a question and answer period with the faculty. Topics covered included the following:
School of Forest Resources Director’s Search: Composing the School of Forest Resources Director’s search committee will be relatively straight forward, once the Chair of the search committee is chosen. We are hoping to have a candidate in place by the beginning of Fall Quarter 2011. Faculty should send names of possible outside candidates to the Dean for her consideration.
The budget: The Dean described the outlook for the upcoming January 2011 budget cut as serious, although she stated it is highly unlikely that the UW will declare a financial emergency. A 10% budget cut would be the best-case scenario, which would translate into an effective 24% cut for SFR. She is having conversations with multiple people regarding the continuing decrease in state funding and what it means in regards to our fundamental mission. How the cut will be distributed between the College units is as yet undecided. Regarding outside stakeholders coming to the fore, the current philanthropic environment is such that private donors in general do not want to see their funding replace state funding. We are hoping the state legislature will reaffirm the Institute of Forest Resources, and are investigating legislative interest in industry-related projects. The
Dean wanted to reassure the faculty that promotion and tenure decisions are being made without budget related consideration. Other considerations include admitting more out-of-state and international students, early retirements, tuition changes, and the elimination of whole programs.
SFR’s name change: Following discussion at the faculty meeting, this item will be added to the Executive
Council meeting on 12/2/10. The name change is a decision that can be made by the Dean.
UPCOMING EVENTS
The next Faculty Meeting will be on Tuesday, January 11, 2011 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in Anderson Hall
