Faculty Meeting Minutes
March 12, 2013, 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

CALL TO ORDER
• Call to order by Director Tom DeLuca 10:33 a.m. Rob Harrison moved and Dan Vogt seconded the motion
that the faculty approve the minutes of the February 26, 2013 Faculty Meeting. The faculty voted to
approve these minutes with a vote of 32 Approve, 0 Oppose, 6 Abstain.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
• Thomas Knittle will be the speaker for the SEFS 2013 Sustaining our World lecture, his lecture is titled:
“Built Ecologies: regionalism and resource integration in the built world. The event is on April 4, 2013 in
Kane Hall. Communications director, Karl Wirsing, will be posting to the SEFS blog about the lecture.
• The Annual SEFS Recognition Event will take place the afternoon of Tuesday May 14, 2013 in the Forest
Club Room. Time is yet to be determined. Anyone wanting to get involved in planning should talk to
Nevada Smith.
• SEFS Graduation is on Friday June 14, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. in Kane Hall Room 120. A reception will follow
in the SEFS Courtyard. All faculty are encouraged to attend and participate.
• Chinese Academy of Forestry coming in next Friday. Forest management in PNW is their topic.
• A group from Bogor Indonesia who are interested in community based forestry will be meeting with faculty
from SEFS on Friday March 15, 2013 in Gerberding Hall from 3:00-4:00 p.m..
• Mark Swanson, a former Ph.D. student, just got tenure one year early at WSU.
FACULTY ACTIONS
• Proposed Visiting Associate Professor Appointment
Dan Vogt moved and Graham Allan seconded the motion that Turan Yuksek be a Visiting Associate
Professor. This appointment is sponsored by Dan Vogt. Dr. Yuksek is an Associate Professor at the Recep
Tayyip Erdogan University in Turkey in the Department of Landscape and Ornamental Plants. Dr. Yuksek
will be coming here to observe and collaborate on projects with Drs. Harrison, Zabowski, K. Vogt, and D.
Vogt. Physical soils and land use is his specialty. September through December paid by Turkey higher
education council. He will work on projects relating to evaluating forest lands for bioenergy, modeling
tropical forest NPP including spectral analyses and soil parameters, deep soil carbon in forest plantations,
response of forest plantations to N fertilization, using 15N as a tracer in forest nutrient cycling. His funding
will be fully supported by the Turkish Council of Higher Education. He will have a desk in Bloedel 311.
The faculty voted to approve this appointment. The results of the vote are on file in the Director’s office.
• Proposed Affiliate Assistant Professor Appointment
Kristiina Vogt moved and Ernesto Alvarado seconded the motion that Daniel C. Donato be an Affiliate
Assistant Professor. This appointment is sponsored by Jerry Franklin. Dr. Donato recently assumed a
permanent position as a Natural Resource Scientist for the Washington Department of Natural Resources at
Olympic National Forest. Dr. Donato has been a regular scientific collaborator with Dr. Franklin including
establishment, measurement, and analysis of long-term forest successional plots, ecosystem recovery
processes following major disturbances, and the role of forests in carbon sequestration. They are currently
working together in development of a series of papers on forest population dynamics. It is anticipated that
Dr. Donato will contribute to the teaching program, and will be a member of graduate student committees.
He also hopes to collaborate with faculty in activities at the Wind River Field Station. The faculty voted to
approve this appointment. The results of the vote are on file in the Director’s office.
