Faculty Meeting Minutes

CALL TO ORDER
• The meeting was called to order by Director Tom DeLuca at 10:35 a.m. Bruce Bare moved and Frank
Greulich seconded the motion that the faculty approve the minutes of the November 12, 2013 and
November 26, 2014 Faculty Meetings. These minutes were approved by a vote of 33 Approve, 0 Oppose,
and 0 Abstain of 41 eligible to vote faculty members.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
• SEFS Seminar Series will take place on Wednesday afternoon during Winter Quarter 2014. We will once
again have receptions after the first seminar of the month. The Winter 2014 Series kicks off on Wednesday
January 8, 2014 with Teodora Minkova from the Washington DNR who’ll be speaking on Monitoring
riparian and aquatic habitat in the Olympic Experimental State Forest – first results and research
opportunities. Hope to see you all there!
• This is Kevin Hodgson and David Ford’s last official faculty meeting. Dr. Ford will continue as Director of
ONRC for next several months before taking off for France. Dr. Hodgson will be back this summer
teaching a summer course.
• Work Planning meetings continue to be scheduled. Please respond to Nevada’s email with your preferred
times. Dr. DeLuca would like to keep them brief this year. They will be scheduled for ½ hour and it is
hoped that you will come prepared for a short meeting.
FACULTY ACTIONS
• Proposed Faculty Search
The faculty are asked to approve initiating the search for the ONRC Director who would also be hired as a
faculty member in SEFS. Discussion will take place at the meeting. The vote will be solicited
electronically. This proposal was tabled for consideration at the next faculty meeting.
• Proposed Curriculum Change
It is the recommendation of the SEFS Curriculum Committee that the faculty approve the following
adjustments to the BSE program requirements: dropping the Chemical Engineering course requirements
and replacing them with two new core BSE courses; adding Applied Math 351 and 352 as alternatives to
Math 307 and 308 adding A A 260 (Thermodynamics) as a lower-division requirement; and increasing the
engineering topics requirement from 8 credits to 12. This proposal was tabled for consideration at a future
faculty meeting.
• Proposed Curriculum Change
It is the recommendation of the SEFS Curriculum Committee that the faculty approve changing a course
offering BSE 491 special topics to BSE 391 Engineering Principles of Biorefineries. This course focuses on
biorefinery processes instead of more general chemical engineering. It is the first in a two part series and
will replace the previously required ChemE series. This proposal was tabled for consideration at a future
faculty meeting.
• Proposed Curriculum Change
It is the recommendation of the SEFS Curriculum Committee that the faculty approve changing a course
offering BSE 492 special topics to BSE 392 Bioresource Transport Phenomena. This course focuses on
biorefinery processes instead of more general chemical engineering. It is the second in a two part series and
will replace the previously required ChemE series. This proposal was tabled for consideration at a future
faculty meeting.
• Proposed Curriculum Change
Frank Greulich moved and Ivan Eastin seconded the motion that the faculty approve the recommendation of
the SEFS Curriculum Committee to change SEFS 571 (Resource Policy and Administration) from a 5 credit
course to a 4 credit course to more accurately reflect the workload. The faculty approved this curriculum
change by a vote of 31 Approve, 0 Oppose, 2 Abstain of 41 eligible to vote faculty.

Proposed Curriculum Change
It is the recommendation of the SEFS Curriculum Committee that the faculty approve a new jointly listed
course: ANTH 410/ENVIR 410/ESRM405 entitled “Growing Stuff: Ecology, Economy, and Culture of
Resource-Production Ecosystems” to be taught by Professor Steve Harrell. This course has been offered
successfully four times as a 400-level special topics course in the Program on the Environment (ENVIR)
and is now proposed to be a jointly listed course in Anthropology, SEFS, and Program on the Environment.
This proposal was tabled for consideration at a future faculty meeting
• Proposed Curriculum Change
Frank Greulich moved and Kevin Hodgson seconded the motion that the faculty approve the
recommendation of the SEFS Curriculum Committee to change the recommended prerequisite in ESRM
331/BIOL 331 from BIOL 117 to BIOL 317. This course was renumbered and recommended by Biology.
The faculty approved this curriculum change by a vote of 32 Approve, 0 Oppose, 1 Abstain of 41 eligible to
vote faculty.
