ADVISING
Know where to go!
What is Academic Advising?
We both have responsibilities in
the collaborative process.
Academic advising is a collaborative process.
We expect you to:
Your academic advisor will help you to understand your
rights and responsibilities as a student and guide you toward
the resources available to define and reach your academic,
personal and professional goals.
Attend advising appointments prepared and with questions for
your advisor.
Become knowledgeable of EMU requirements, policies, procedures,
and resources.
Research the schedule of classes and prepare a tentative schedule.
Reflect upon your educational, personal, and professional goals and
be prepared to discuss them.
Read your EMU email frequently and respond in a timely manner.
Assemble an “advising folder” to keep all of your advising materials
organized (e.g. relevant test scores, program planning sheet,
Academic Advising Syllabus, orientation paperwork, etc.).
Meet with an academic advisor regularly (at least once per year)
to review progress towards your degree and when encountering
problems that may impact academic progress.
Follow up on responsibilities, such as taking the Math Placement Exam
or meeting with an academic department.
Take responsibility for your decisions and your education.
Meet at least once per year with an advisor for your major
and/or minor.
Professional Academic Advisors help you navigate
the University system and specialize in the General
Education Program. Professional Academic Advisors
are available by College (see subsequent pages for
more information.).
Faculty Advisors help you navigate your major and/or
field of study. Faculty Advisors are available by Major or
Minor (see catalog.emich.edu for more information).

You can expect your advisor to:
Help you develop and refine your academic goals and career
objectives.
Assist you in understanding your academic requirements, program
progression and polices or procedures.
Make appropriate referrals to on and off campus resources.
Be available to answer questions through scheduled appointments,
telephone or email.
Listen to your concerns and respect individual values and choices.
Help you make informed decisions, but not make decisions for you.
