Application for the 2016 General Education Assessment
Leadership Institute:
May 2-3, Halle Library
Due April 15, 2016
A key finding of the General Education Review Committee’s report is that EMU must engage in more
rigorous assessment of student learning. Therefore, the Assessment Institute, scheduled for May 2-3,
2016, will focus on the assessment of student learning in the General Education Program with emphasis
on developing faculty and lecturer assessment leaders.
Coordinators of the Institute include Peggy Liggit, John Koolage, Maria Milletti, and Doug Baker, and
they encourage Tenured/Tenure-track Faculty, Full-Time Lecturers, and Part-Time Lecturers (Level B)* to
apply, particularly if you are interested in the following:
 Developing as a leader / facilitator of assessment as part of a larger effort to assess student
learning from programmatic perspectives
 Contributing to assessments in any of the General Education categories (e.g., Knowledge of the
Disciplines—Arts, Humanities, Natural Science, Social Science)**
 Engaging in the scholarship and research of assessment, particularly as it improves student
learning
 Developing tools for assessing student learning—especially from a programmatic perspective,
including learning more about using Canvas and the AAC&U Value rubrics
*Important note for Part-Time Lecturers, Level B: Participation in this event does NOT guarantee future
employment at EMU.
**For complete list of General Education Program areas and student learning outcomes, go to
https://www.emich.edu/gened/learningoutcomes.php.
A $300 honorarium is available to participants who attend both days of the Assessment Institute AND
complete an assessment action plan, which will be implemented in the next academic year (2016-17). To
complete the necessary application and paperwork to process the honorarium, the Faculty Development
Center (FDC) requires your department head’s approval for participation.
Please talk with your department head/school director and let him/her know about your interest in this
professional development opportunity, particularly since your leadership will potentially support the
department’s efforts to assess student learning.
Next Steps
 Complete the attached application and return to the Faculty Development Center no later than
April 15, 2016. Email to facultydevelopment@emich.edu

