Deloitte Market Analysis Review • Dr. Martin began a general review of the Deloitte Market Analysis report. The report is very detailed we can, however, identify specific pieces for our work. • Many students attend college near their home. Many of our students are from nearby. • The decline of the population in Michigan and the decline of HS graduates will add to a hypercompetitive market. • Deloitte indicates that there is a market in the Traverse City area. This is contrary to the outcome we have seen but perhaps a different focus in this area would prove successful. • There was some discussion regarding on line education. An institution must have on line courses to be competitive but it will not increase market share entirely. • Attention should be given to “skilled” degrees and training, this may be a market to pursue. Not always a community college product. • Graduate market is soft due to financial issues for students. They are attempting to pay off loans while continuing education. Comments: • John Lumm commented that all in all we do not need a massive “re-tooling” of our offering; we may just need to adjust in some areas. • Bin Ning noted that we need to grow in our STEM degrees aside from building an Engineering program. We have a lower share of STEM degrees as compared to our competitors. • Engineering schools are expensive, perhaps partner with U of M Dearborn. • Jim Carroll indicated that middle school teachers are identified as high wage and high growth. This is an area that could be easily overlooked due to assumptions. • Ellen Gold commented that many students do not wish to leave Michigan. • Dr. Martin indicated that teachers will be retiring within the next 10 years and Special Education and STEM areas should be noted. • Dr. Martin explained that Deloitte indicates that a market analysis report, such as this, has a 5-7 year lifespan. Therefore, perhaps we should be initiating this study four years from now to continue the cycle. 1 • Dr. Martin indicated that Deloitte representatives will be on campus October 29, to present the results of this analysis. Time and location is TBD. HLC Report • Bin provided an overview of the HLC report giving a brief overview and definition of the categories and notations. Bin pointed out that the HLC is reviewing a 100 page report from us and are not visiting campus when creating this report. The content is good and will assist with our planning. Very soon we must begin conversation in relation to identifying a quality initiative project. Our site visit will be in 2017-2018. Mission Writing Group Mission and Values • A draft of the Mission Statement was reviewed by the group. Walter Kraft described the basis for the building of this draft and noted that the team focused on phrases that were presented by all team contributions. Attempts to look for and utilize common themes helped to construct this draft. • Feedback from the group indicated that the draft was concise, does not sound boilerplate, and certainly is built around students. • Overall, the mission statement draft feedback was positive. Strategic Directions Discussion Work Groups • Work Groups should schedule time to meet prior to the next meeting. • Goals and objectives will be discussed at the next meeting. Next Meeting/Adjournment • October 26, 9-10:30 am 205 Welch • Meeting adjourned – 10:05 am Respectfully submitted, Casey Wooster 2
