UCL GLOBAL ENGAGEMENT OFFICE
A&H/SHS Joint Faculty Funding for Global Partnerships with ‘Sea and Currents Fund’ – Criteria
 To support the academic community in driving forward the Global Engagement Strategy (GES).
 A fund of £20,000 per Faculty, recipients of which will be decided jointly by the Faculty Vice Deans
(International), Dr. Ruth Mandel (SHS) and Professor Sonu Shamdasani (A&H).
 Awards from £500 up to £5,000 each for new projects/initiatives. Joint faculty proposals are
particularly welcome.
What can be funded?
 Academic or enterprise activity involving one or more individuals from the faculty and a ‘global
partner,’ i.e., colleague(s)/research team(s)/department(s), based in an overseas HEI, research
institute or international public/corporate body. This could be at one of two levels:
o Collaborations initiated and run by individual academics or departments, e.g. by a PI and
their research group with other individuals across the globe (in the ‘sea of academic
freedom’).
o More strategic faculty-wide collaborations with global partners, usually initiated and led by the
Dean (following the ‘currents’ of activity).

Activities could include:
o Organising a joint seminar(s) with international partners (venue, transport etc.)
o Visiting a global partner or research project, or, bringing over an international partner to work
on a research paper/project (costs for flights, hotel, food etc.)

The objective of activities should meet one or more of the strategic drivers of the GES:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Giving our students the best possible preparation for global careers and lives;
Co-creating wise solutions to global challenges and problems;
Increasing independent research capability around the world;
Marshalling our expertise in enterprise, innovation and translational research;
Growing our profile to reflect our achievements and engage more effectively.
 Applications are encouraged for, though do not need to be limited to, work with partners in UCL’s
geographical priorities:

applications from a range of backgrounds regardless of career stage, age, disability, ethnicity,
gender, sexual orientation and religion.
When does the activity need to take place?
 Funding must be for future activity where spending is planned before 31 July 2016. The activity itself
may happen after this date--by the end of 2016 at the latest (e.g., you can raise a Purchase Order
before 31 July 2016, for travel and accommodation for a conference happening in September 2016).
What cannot be funded?
 Activity which does not involve a global partner; activities which are solely UK-based/focused;
