Fred D. Alexander Boulevard Project
Construction of Charlotte’s
largest road project, estimated at
$50 million, is well underway and
progressing towards successful
completion.
Section B1 (between the ramp
at Old Mt. Holly Road/Tank Farm
Road and Valleydale Road) was
opened to traffic on November
1, 2010 with landscaping for this
section completed in April 2011.
Construction on section B2
(between Freedom Drive and Old
Mt. Holly Road) halted earlier this
year when the original contractor
notified the City that it could not
complete the project. The good
news is the bonding company,
which guaranteed the contract
completion, immediately turned
around and hired a new contractor,
Blythe Development, to complete
the work. Blythe Development is
also the contractor who is currently
ahead of schedule on Section C.
Even though some time was lost
during this transition, the City is
hopeful Section B2 will get back on
schedule and be completed by the
end of the year.
Section C (between Valleydale
Road and Brookshire Boulevard)
is expected to be opened to traffic
ahead of the scheduled September
completion date. Landscaping of
sections B2 and C will be installed
during the planting season starting
this December.
On February 22, a plaque was
unveiled and dedicated to honor
Fredrick Douglas Alexander, the
first African American elected to
the Charlotte City Council who
later became a member of the NC
Legislature.
The Project Team appreciates
your patience. We look forward
to celebrating the project’s
successful completion at the
end of the year.

The Freedom Drive Intersection
Project will include the widening
of Freedom Drive where Fred D.
Alexander Boulevard and the future
realigned Little Rock Road tie into
Freedom Drive. This will allow for
left turn lanes to the new roads.
Utility relocation work is currently
underway and anticipated to
be complete by summer 2011.
Construction is anticipated to be
complete by the end of the year.
If you have any questions on
this intersection project, please
call or email the City’s Engineering
& Property Management project
manager, Tom Russell at 704-3364639 or trussell@charlottenc.gov.
