Little Sugar Creek
Stream and floodplain restoration near uptown
Finishing touches
Newly restored, Little Sugar Creek is looking good from
7th Street to Morehead. Native plants added to the
banks as part of the floodplain restoration are thriving
in the spring sunshine. A Great Blue Heron (nicknamed
“Big Blue”) has claimed the section near Charlottetowne
Avenue as his private kingdom. And he apparently is
finding plenty of fish in the sparkling stream.
This month, Mecklenburg Park and Recreation is finishing the
greenway trail from Charlottetowne Avenue upstream to CPCC.
The newest section of stream and greenway work will be dedicated
at a public event in April. And it celebrates the transformation of
this section of Little Sugar Creek from a neglected eyesore to a
community treasure.
