For Immediate Release June 27, 2011 SWIMMING ADVISORY LIFTED FOR A COVE ON LAKE NORMAN AFTER SEWAGE DISCHARGE Cornelius, NC – The SWIMMING ADVISORY that was issued on June 23, 2011 for a single cove on Lake Norman adjacent to Town Harbour Road in Cornelius (see attached map) has been lifted. Lab results indicate that bacteria counts have returned to normal levels that are safe for swimming. The SWIMMING ADVISORY was issued after approximately 267 gallons of sewage discharged to the cove on Lake Norman during the afternoon of June 21, 2011 at Town Harbour Road in Cornelius. The spill was caused by a broken valve in a sewer line on Windy Point Drive off Town Harbour Road. The discharge was stopped by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities and repairs to the sewer line have been completed. On Friday, June 24,, 2011, water samples were collected from the lake by CharlotteMecklenburg Storm Water Services staff. The laboratory results of those samples indicate levels of fecal coliform bacteria at 13 colonies per 100 milliliters. This is well below 200 colonies/100 ml, which is the level determined to be safe for swimming. # # # # Media Contact: Rusty Rozzelle Office: 704-336-5449 Rusty.Rozzelle@MecklenburgCountyNC.gov Cove that was affected by the Swimming Advisory is shown in gold.
