604.10 Lintels. Masonry over openings shall be supported by steel lintels, reinforced concrete or masonry lintels or
masonry arches, designed to support load imposed.
INTERPRETATION:
Any outdoor HVAC equipment, whose duct system penetrates the outside masonry wall shall have the masonry
above the penetration supported with a steel, concrete or masonry lintel as approved by the building section 604.10
of the 2009 NC Residential Building Code. Steel lintels must extend a minimum of three inches (3”) into
undisturbed masonry on each side of the penetration.
