Grease duct systems and exhaust equipment serving a Type I hood shall have a clearance to combustible construction of not less than 18 inches (457 mm), and shall have a clearance to noncombustible construction and gypsum wallboard attached to noncombustible structures of not less than 3 inches (76 mm). Exception: Listed and labeled factory-built commercial kitchen grease ducts and exhaust equip ment installed in accordance with Section 304.1. 105.2 Alternative materials, methods, equipment and appliances. The provisions of this code are not intended to prevent the installation of any material or to prohibit any method of construction not specifically prescribed by this code, provided that any such alternative has been approved. An alternative material or method of construction shall be approved where the code official finds that the proposed design is satisfactory and complies with the intent of the provisions of this code, and that the material, method or work offered is, for the purpose intended, at least the equivalent of that prescribed in this code in quality, strength, effectiveness, fire resistance, durability and safety. INTERPRETATION: The use of Pyroscat, Firemaster or equal is approved as an alternative method per 105.2 provided that it is installed per the manufacturer’s installation instructions and it is used to wrap the entire grease exhaust system from the hood to the termination.
