Integrated Access to Digital Data and Documents in the Humanities and Social Sciences BUILDING COMMUNITIES ? Yannick Maignien Edinburgh 25 nov 2008 PROGRAM ADONIS-tge is a Major Facility (Très Grand Équipement) launched by the CNRS (French National Centre for Scientific Research) open to other partners. It aims to promote integrated access to digital data and documents in the Humanities and Social Sciences. • What means « Integrated access »or -Unified access- face to the extreme diversity, of disciplines, of digital objects, of various institutions, of many uses ? • Face to the extreme complexity of interdiscinarity projects, even with nature’s sciences (health, warm climate, neuro-sciences, immigration, etc…) • The key issue is the notion of Meta-portal, as a convergence of access, preservation, publications and uses • …Building a E-Science or CyberInfrastructure, for SHS purpose Yannick Maignien Edinburgh 25 nov 2008 GOALS • Preparing a shared, interoperable space for navigating scientific documentation at the European and international level • Considering the researcher in the center of dynamic ICT cycle : producing data, preserving, publishing, re-using… • Structuring a lightweight framework, involving the already existing actors (INIST, MSH network, ABES, CINES, IN2P3, Universities, Editors, Libraries, etc.) • Fostering the networked community by establishing clear partnerships amongst SHS actors and research communities…Digital Humanities, digital Social sciences, Digital virtual models for cognition…. Social networks in SHS Identification Authentification services Grid computing Making resources and data accessible • A « METAPORTAL » as an integrated platform to exising gateways • Interconnecting data, metadata, but also players and services ( Cf. Cornell’s NSDL Project) • Accessing Cultural heritage ( BNF, Museums, archives, mages holdings, etc…) Yannick Maignien Edinburgh 25 nov 2008 Making resources and data accessible Experiment FEDORA commons solution, with ATOS Consulting, INIST in access and preservation (cf. Yannick Maignien Edinburgh 25 nov 2008 Assisting changes in uses • Probably, the main purpose, the more difficult challenge: – How to be to the nearest edge of the diversity, specificity of SHS ? – And …How, to promote generic mutual solutions • For instance, are they : – a social science coherent gateway (quantitatives data, statistics, and so on…)…As QUETELET network to CESSDA ? – a cultural corpora generic access for humanities data…As CLARIN? – A virtual an simulation toolbox for modeling and cognitives theories? • How to assess and value science uses and publications with bibliometric tools in SHS? • How to cope with high convergence between Research needs (CNRS..) and high Education specific needs ( Loi LRU in France …)?
