A single "uncovered" cough gave the same reading. A handkerchief placed over the mouth when coughing assists in .m obtaining a pianissimo;* , 0 4 Gramophone recordings as the springboard for an international career--even today that is unusual for an interpretative artist. The Hungarian pianist Tamas ssary became known in the Western world through his first recordings. The choice of work was also unusual; they consisted entirely of music by Franz Liszt, some solo pieces and the t w o Piano Concertos in E and A major. It was greatly to his credit that for his debut he chose not the most popular items of the piano repertoire, but works by his fellowcountryman who was celebrated as a virtuoso but is often misun&rstood and underestimated as a composer. The wide-ranging, often most demanding programmes of Vasary's concerts and solo recitals have since shown that he is by no mealls only a Liszt specialist, b u t a modern, many-sided artist whose field of action is very broad. The fact that Vasary is Hungarian has a considerable bearing on the nature of his gifts. He was born at Debrecen in 1933.He made his first public appearance at the age of eight, playing Mozart's early Rano Concerto K.107.A year later he gave his first piano recital in his home.'town. When Erno Dohnanyi made a guest appearance at Debrecen after the war he was impressed b y the promise s b w n by the young pianist, whom he encouraged to continue his studies in the capital. Vasary's teachers at the Franz Liszt Acaderiiy in Budapest were Jozsef Gat and Lajos Hernadi. Two years later he won the international Franz Liszt Prize. His training suddenly seemed to be m jeopardy when the Vasary family were deported to a rural area by dfficial decree, and ran into serious financial difficulties. However, Vasary found generous friends in Zoltan Kodajy and the pianist Annie Fischer, who assisted the young artist to the best of their ability. In 1954 he concluded his studies, obtaining a concert diploma, but he remained at. the Academy as Kodaiy had arranged for hiin t o receive an appointment to teach theoretical subjects#hring that period he also appeared as a pianist in Leningrad, Moscow, and other musical centres in Eastern &iter the Hungarian uprising in 1956 Vasary left his h o m e b d a n d setiled for a time in Switzerland, where the pianist Ckra Haskil made her young celleague wcnCeome. Later London became his second home. His London debut in 19611and-ciaLcoae&+ue n a.tttle-R&, F e s r h l - H W e ma~k-&e . . 1~ ~ e M ~ i ~ g r t e t 6+h i r mnn e s c rt ~ appeared with the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra reamer. A year later under George Siell at the Carnegie Hall, New York. Concerts followed in England, Scotland, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, Italy and South ~ f r i c a l T h e i r repercussions were uncommonly unanimous and positive. The first thing which strikes one about Vasary's playing i s his impeccable technique. Precision of touch, sparkling ability and assurance even in the most difficult passages are taken for granted by modern virtuosi. With Vasary, however, the technical process of playing is never allowed to take the centre of the stage. It appears to be blended by temperament, imagination, intelligence and taste into the musical conception, which retains distance and moderation despite the in.tensity of the artist's personal involvement. It is therefore easily understandable that Vasary has a particular leaning towards the lyricism, subtlety, tender dynamic nuances and scope for sensitive and poetic interpretation which lend enchantment and intimacy of expression t o the dream world of Chopin's fantasy pieces. Tamas Vasary has given many recitals in Ireland, notably in Dublin and Limerick. This evening's recltal will be repeated in the Royal Festival Hall, Loadon, on Sunday March 14th.
