GRIDSTART and European Activities Dr Mark Parsons EPCC & The UK National e-Science Centre The University of Edinburgh Project summary z European very early Commission funded Grid projects – €15 million in 2000, €20 million in 2001 – 10 projects funded and running to date (8 more 2002 in negotiation) – Many have a strong scientific focus – EPCC leads GRIDSTART cluster project z maximising impact of EU Grid projects – consolidation of technical advances, providing a coherent European voice Pre-2001 projects z 3 projects pre-2001 – DAMIEN z z z Total costs €2million, 21 partners Middleware building blocks for simulation and visualisation CAE (aerospace) and industrial simulations – DATAGRID z Total costs €15million, 21 partners z European scale testbed and middleware development z Particle physics, Earth observation and Biology Pre-2001 projects (cont) – EUROGRID z Total costs €3.5million, 11 partners z Testbed linking EU HPC centres with industry z Biology, Meteorology, Industrial design, ASP z Total funding €15million 2001 projects z7 projects in 2001 – CROSSGRID z Grid infrastructure component development z 21 partners z Large CERN centric project – DATATAG z Transatlantic Grid networking testbed z 4 partners z CERN networking focus 2001 projects (cont) – EGSO z European Solar Observatory virtual archive z 10 partners z Led by Bob Bentley from MSSL at UCL – GRIA z Testbed for industrial applications – focus on eBusiness z 5 partners z One of the most commercially focussed projects 2001 projects (cont) – GRIDLAB z Application toolkit for simulation codes z 11 partners z Led by Jarek Nabryzski from PSNC – GRIP z Interoperability between UNICORE and GLOBUS z 7 partners z Increasing interest in UNICORE z Total funding €20million EU Projects Applications GRIDSTART GRIA EGSO EUROGRID GRIP GRIDLAB DAMIEN CROSSGRID DATAGRID DATATAG Middleware & Tools Industry/business middleware testbed middleware application interoperability testbed Grid European fortransatlantic building infrastructure industrial linking development for solar toolkit blocks EU applications between Grid observatory HPC component for networking &Grid simulation centres Unicore testbed –virtual simulation focus development and –and testbed PP, and archive on industry Globus EO, e-Business visualisation codes Bio Science 2002 projects z9 projects in 2002 (last call FP5) – FLOWGRID z Establishment of a CFD virtual organisation using GRID infrastructure z 6 partners – OPENMOLGRID z Development of a unified environment for solving molecular design/engineering tasks z 5 partners 2002 projects (cont) – GRACE z Development of a just in time distributed search and categorization engine z 6 partners (including CERN) – COG z Use of Grid technologies in industry. Ontologies of modelling of data in dispersed locations. z 4 partners 2002 projects (cont) – MOSES z Enabling content providers to build modular and scalable Knowledge Grid - management tools etc. z 7 partners – GEMSS z Testbed for medical computing and resource/service provider to clinical environment. z 10 partners 2002 projects (cont) – BIOGRID z Perform a trial for the introduction of the Grid approach in biotechnology industry. z 6 partners – SELENE z Bridging the gap between semantic web technology and peer-to-peer computing. z 5 partners 2002 projects (cont) – MAMMOGRID z Using Grid technology develop a EU wide database of mammograms for healthcare research. z 12 partners z The total value of these projects is not yet known. z We hope to cluster these new projects with GRIDSTART - discussions are ongoing. Summary z z z Commission have funded a lot of interesting projects – most are on the application side GRIDSTART clusters many of these projects Framework 6 will be interesting but – First call will be delayed almost certainly – Time between call and submission will be too short to respond … whole process has to be questioned – We should not let Framework 6 deflect the UK programme
