Bob Nichol (ICG Portsmouth) FUAP: FAR UNIVERSE ADVISORY PANEL FUAP Official Remit • One of five advisory panels created to provide long-term advice to PPAN at STFC • Our science remit is “parts of the astronomy and space science programmes concerned with the global properties of our galaxy, with objects beyond our galaxy, and with cosmology.” • Our tasks are: Draft and maintain a roadmap describing current and future research opportunities in their areas, for presentation and approval by PPAN. Consult and interact with the community to ensure its views are canvassed and there is an appropriate and effective route for communication with STFC on strategic programmatic issues. Make an independent presentation to PPAN on the relevant panel area in years in which an STFC Programmatic Review takes place, thereby providing community input to the programmatic review process. FUAP Membership • Sarah Bridle • Anthony Challinor • Chris Conselice • Shude Mao • Rob Fender • Bob Nichol (chair) • Paul O'Brien A long‐term science roadmap for the extra‐galacCc community which we will be updated over the coming years and provide PPAN and STFC with our science prioriCes for the coming decades. A posiCve statement on the faciliCes, projects and experiments needed both today and in the future to achieve the science roadmap and maintain UK leadership in strategic areas. A broad view of the UK science producCvity, which could include all aspects of a successful and healthy UK astronomical community. Other Panels Universe Advisory Panel (NUAP) is chaired by Michele Dougherty and is focused on the contents of our Galaxy ParCcle Astrophysics Advisory Panel (PAAP) is chaired by Philip Mauskopf and there are obvious potenHal overlaps with FUAP, e.g., CMB research, cosmic‐ray experiments, etc. Ground‐based Review (GBR) is chaired by Michael Rowan‐Robinson and was established by STFC to review present and future opHcal/IR/radio faciliHes available to UK astronomers. This review is focused mainly on such faciliHes and is tasked with performing a major community review of these faciliHes before the Autumn. The GBR will report to STFC and the PPAN advisory panels by the end of October, and will then be dissolved. Present SituaHon We have craSed an iniHal science strategy document This document is now open for consultaHon, see hSp://research.icg.port.ac.uk/fuap‐quesConnaire Established website for informaHon hSp://research.icg.port.ac.uk/wikis/fuap Cosmology • What are the physical laws that govern the beginning of the Universe? • What is the origin of large-scale structures in the Universe? • What is the nature of the dark matter and dark energy? • Is our present model of cosmology based on the correct laws of physics and assumptions? First Light • How and when did the first stars and black holes in the Universe form? • What are the best ways to find these first objects in the Universe? • How and when did the Universe become reionized? • How and when did the Universe become enriched with all the complex elements we see today? Galaxies • How do galaxies form and evolve? • What is the role of environment and interactions in galaxy evolution? • What are the contents of galaxies and the details of their internal structures and mechanisms? • What lies between the galaxies? Extreme Astrophysics • Do our laws of physics on Earth apply under extreme conditions in the Universe? • What is the astrophysics behind accretion of matter and energetic feedback around compact objects? • What are the sources of gravitational waves and neutrinos? • How and where does relativistic particle acceleration occur? Next Steps Web questionnaire ends July 10th Read, digest and update science strategy document by end of July Next map facilities to science (August) Consult with community (late August/early September) First report by mid-september Presentation to PPAN by end of September Final Comments STFC budget “ok” for this year, but life gets tough next year and beyond We have some breathing space to make some priorities Everything we do is public (see webpage) We know people are wary of too much consultation, but we need it! Thank you!
