Statement from Charlotte City Manager Ron Carlee
Yesterday then-Mayor Cannon submitted his resignation to the City Attorney and me. This event does
not change how our city is run day-to-day. Charlotte is led by a Council/Manager form of Government,
which means the City Manager oversees the City’s operations and City Council provides policy direction
and oversight.
Charlotte is more than one man. Yesterday, your Utility Department treated 91.26 million gallons of
drinking water and performed more than 620 account service orders. Today, Solid Waste Services
completed 60 routes, providing services to 38,151 households. Through 11:00 this morning,
CharMeck311 had answered 1,218 calls – and all were answered at an average speed of one second.
We have a city government staffed by professionals who are devoted to serving the people of
Charlotte. Their efforts today show that none of that has changed. Earlier this afternoon, I spoke to city
employees by video link and told them that the leaders and residents of this city expect nothing less,
and we expect nothing less of ourselves.
We know that some city departments were mentioned in the complaint. We cannot comment on this
as we don’t want to do anything that would interfere with the federal investigation. However, if any
questionable activities are uncovered, we will act swiftly and take steps to ensure they don’t happen
again.
We will continue to cooperate in every way, provide any documents, and answer any questions that
investigators ask. The accusations in yesterday’s warrant do not portray the way the City of Charlotte
does business. I am grateful to all of our employees and proud to be a part of this team that is so
committed to serving the people of Charlotte.
