International Lattice Field Theory Network
Workshop
e-Science Institute 07th – 10th March 2005
This was the second in a series of biannual informal workshops, the first of which was held at Izu
in Japan, whose purpose is to encourage international co-operation, co-ordination and
collaboration in lattice field theory through the early exchange of ideas and results. It was
attended by 52 scientists from Europe, Japan and the USA.
The International Lattice Field Theory Network (ILFTN) is a research programme sponsored by
Japan's JSPS aiming at building and expanding a co-operative international framework in lattice
field theories among universities and research institutions in Japan, Germany, the UK and the
USA. It is motivated by the growth of multinational computing and data sharing infrastructures,
particularly the International Lattice Data Grid (ILDG), that are creating new opportunities for
collaborative research in lattice field theory. The Workshop was also supported by the Scottish
Universities Physics Alliance (SUPA), a Scotland-wide organisation for research and
postgraduate training in several fields of physics including lattice field theory.
The Workshop focussed on recent developments in lattice QCD that are relevant for calculations
of importance to experiment, particularly through simulations of light dynamical quarks using the
improved staggered, chirally symmetric and non-perturbatively improved Wilson quark actions. In
addition, it reviewed progress in establishing the world-wide ILDG, metadata standards for
marking up lattice QCD data, and the new and planned terascale computers for lattice QCD. The
next Workshop in this series will be held at Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, USA,
in October 2005.
