Turkey-European Union Relations at the Crossroad of EastWest

Nearly for 200 years, the westernization has been key principle of
modernization, nation building and foundation of republic. The
westernization process had been effective in the late period of
Ottoman Empire and the beginning of new republic. The founder of
republic of Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk had paid attention to
westernization and pointed to west for young republic. From that time
Turkey has been calling herself as a western country. In 1959 Turkey
applied to membership of European Union as a part of her
westernization process. Recently Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip
Erdogan criticized EU for double standard policy and threatened to
break up relations with EU. Instead of EU, Prime Minister Erdogan
offered to become a part of Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
Finally In this paper it will be examined the Turkey’s journey to west in
terms of identity discussion and also what are the parameters in
changing of Turkey’s course toward Asia will be analyzed.
