Chaudhry, Sohail S. Chaudhry and Hasshi Sudler The explosion of information technology has allowed universities to provide professors in cyber classrooms to facilitate learning in another environment. Lucrative new market segments, such as global MBA programs, have allowed many institutions to broaden their customer base to serve a virtual customer. In response to this new demand, several universities have launched “distance learning” initiatives to geographically broaden their students and appeal to timestarved global consumers. In this paper, we will present several aspects of using distance learning techniques in a business school environment. The main issues addressed are the teaching effectiveness and limitations of using both asynchronous and synchronous learning tools through both web conferencing using WIMBA and chat sessions, web cases, and videoconferencing in a graduate business course; and an overview of technologies that will broaden the type of communication tools, such as avatars in a virtual campus is used to facilitate distance learning.
