Topics covered will include shop and personal safety, exterior paint polishing and treatment, interior and upholstery cleaning techniques, proper chemical and equipment usage and dealership porter responsibilities. Course Objectives: The student will be able to: I Recognize and identify exterior paint composition and degrading characteristics a. II Effectively clean, polish and restore paint luster and apply protectant . Recognize and evaluate interior upholstery, fabric and leather soil and fabric wear a. III Recognize and evaluate carpet and fabric type composition a. IV Effectively clean and restore interior upholstery, fabric and leather surfaces. Determine necessary procedures to clean carpet to look as close to original condition as possible. Recognize and evaluate proper chemical and tool equipment usage a. Effectively assess and choose the correct chemical and equipment to perform cleaning and restorative techniques. V Recognize and understand automotive dealership employment responsibilities a. Effectively perform skills necessary to gain and maintain employment as a automotive dealership porter / detailer Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of the course the student should be able to: 1. Safely and responsibly perform an automotive detail while minimizing the negative impact on the environment. Page 2 of 4 01/08/15 2. Effectively assess vehicle condition, determine proper correction action and effectively clean and condition interior and exterior of a vehicle. 3. Effectively perform skills necessary to gain and maintain employment as an automotive dealership porter/ detailer. Attendance Policy: (Class attendance is not a measure of performance or proficiency. Whether a student is just physically present in the class is not a valid basis for grading. Reference Title 5 Section 55002 of the California Code of Regulations: (A) Grading Policy. The course provides for measurement of student performance in terms of stated course objectives and culminates in a formal, permanently recorded grade based upon uniform standards in accordance with section 55758 of this Division. The grade is based on demonstrated proficiency in the subject matter and the ability to demonstrate that proficiency, at least in part, by means of written expression that may include essays, or, in courses where the curriculum committee deems them to be appropriate, by problem solving exercises or skills demonstrations by students.) Students are expected to attend their classes regularly. Failure to attend the first class session may result in the student being dropped. Failure to attend class jeopardizes not only student’s grades but also the learning potential of the other students who were unable to gain access due to enrollment limits. The class instructor has the right to terminate a student’s enrollment when a student is absent for more than one hour for each unit of class credit. Literally translated for Auto 62, if you are absent for two hours of class during the entire semester either caused by tardy or absences, you may be dropped from the class. Students not attending the first session will be dropped. Grading Policy: Lab Projects Lab projects can be completed in class during lab time, projects will graded on a 0-10 scale. Once all lab projects have been completed, students may be allowed to bring other independent projects at the sole discretion of the instructor. Please clear all projects with the instructor before bringing a vehicle into the lab area. Student Supplies Each student will be required to have a one inch 3 ring binder. This binder will be used to keep notes and class handouts. Tests Tests will be given on a periodic basis and will be of a “hands on” nature and written. Students will be given at least one class period notice before tests are administered. The final exam will be a 20 question written test consisting of multiple choice and true/false questions. Personal Safety Equipment Students will be required to wear safety glasses and a particle mask during lab time. The student will not be allowed in the lab area without wearing safety glasses. No smoking is allowed on campus. You are only allowed to smoke in your car while it is parked in the student parking lots. Students are required to purchase a Victor Valley Community College Automotive Page 3 of 4 01/08/15 Department Uniform Shirt. The shirts can be purchase at the School Book Sore located on the upper campus. It is to be worn while attending VVC Automotive Classes. Grading Scale 100% thru 90% = A 69% thru 60% = D 89% thru 80% = B 59% or below = F 79% thru 70% = C Grade Value Lab 50% Tests 45% SP2 5% SP2 Shop Safety Program All students participating in courses within the automotive program must pass two safety courses on the SP2 website. The safety program contained in the website is intended to both educate the students on both safety and environmental concerns regarding the automotive industry. The student should log into the website using the following information and complete the quizzes and final exams in mechanical safety and mechanical pollution with a grade of 80% or greater. The student will have five attempts at the tests before the test will need to be reset by the instructor. Upon completion of each exam, the student can print out a certificate suitable for framing or inclusion with a resume’.
