Determinants of Workplace Deviance Behaviours in India
and UK It Industry
Kanimozhi Narayanan and Susan E Murphy
Workplace deviance is a behaviour that deviates from the well set organizational
norms and in doing so, threatens the well-being of the organization and its
employees. It has been the cause of about 30% of failure in many organizations.
Thus there is a need to determine the causal factors of these behaviours. Recently
researchers have proposed the importance of positive aspects of deviant behaviours
where employees break organizational norms in an honourable way to help fellow
employees or the organization itself by creatively solving organizational problems
thereby contributing to the well-being of the organization. Thus, for the purpose of the
present study, a model is proposed to determine organisational, work and individual
causes of both negative and positive behaviours. Based on literature, Culture is
expected to have a moderating effect on employee behavioural outcomes and
according to Kroll’s global fraud survey of 2014 India and UK have a high rate of
insider fraud next to United States, Africa and Gulf countries. Thus the sample
involves employees from both India (Collectivistic) and United Kingdom
(Individualistic).
The Study is a work in progress that proposes to test the developed model and the
findings are expected to shed light on behaviour of employees belonging to IT
Industry who are from various cultural backgrounds, have varying pay scales, have
early promotions, belong to diverse time zones, have tight time schedules and prone
to rapid switching between projects that would eventually result in negative or
positive behaviours. The outcomes of the study will enable the organizations to
concentrate on the proposed causes to have positive behavioural outcomes thus
contributing to organizational and individual well-being.
