Instructions
• Record your observations for each location on the sheets provided.
• Try to think about your experience along South Tryon Street from a variety
of viewpoints - as a pedestrian, bicyclist, transit rider, and motorist.
• There is space for additional notes/observations at the back of the worksheet.
• Be prepared to share your thoughts with the group along the way!
• Turn in your worksheet to the tour leader after the tour is finished.
Continue the Conversation
• Lead your own walking tour with friends and family! You can download and
print this worksheet from the project website at http://charmeck.org/city/
charlotte/Transportation/PlansProjects/Pages/ArterialCorridorStudySouthBlvd-STryon-Parkwood.aspx. Please feel free to share your observations
with the contacts at the bottom of this page.
• Stay tuned for more updates on the corridor studies at the website above.
• Come to the South Boulevard & South Tryon Street Corridors Charrette
in May. You’ll have an opportunity to work with designers and City staff
who will help translate your observations into new recommendations for
improving South Tryon Street. Check the website above for details.

Doggett Street
Walking Across South Tryon St. (circle one):
• Are there sufficient opportunities to cross along this portion of South Tryon St.? Y N
• Is there room within the existing roadway (between the curbs) for a pedestrian refuge island? Y N
• Look at the location of the existing utility poles. Would these have to be moved to accommodate
pedestrian improvements that would move the existing curb (like on-street parking, pedestrian refuge
islands, or curb extensions)? Y N
• Do you agree with the following statement? “If there were a crossing along this stretch, people would
use it.”

• What type of crossing treatment(s) would you recommend here? (Please be specific.)

Walking Along South Tryon St. (east side) (circle one):
• Are the sidewalks wide (at least 6 feet) and in good condition (i.e. no missing or broken panels)? Y N
• Is there a sufficient buffer between sidewalks and traffic? Y N
• Does the street include sufficient lighting, shade trees, and landscaping? Y N
This vacant property just south of Doggett Street is likely to redevelop soon. If that development
occurs “by-right” (i.e. without being rezoned) the existing sidewalk will not be required to
be widened or moved away from traffic. The City’s regulations do not require “by-right”
developments to improve substandard sidewalks.
• Do you agree with the following statement? “In the future, the City should require these types of
“by-right” projects to bring sidewalks up to standard by installing a wide grass strip with street trees.”

• Does the pedestrian signal allow adequate time to cross? Y N
• Is the crossing free of visual obstructions (parked cars, utility poles, etc.) that might block the view of
drivers? Y N
• Does the crossing distance feel comfortable? Y N
• Does the crossing have wheelchair ramps and textured panels to assist people with disabilities? Y N
