Jonathan Ferrell Case Timeline Sept. 14, 2013 (2:26 a.m.) Jonathan Ferrell is shot in an officer involved shooting in the early morning hours of Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013 in the Reedy Creek neighborhood of Charlotte. Sept. 14, 2013 (12:30 p.m.) CMPD issues details about the pending investigation into the incident being conducted by detectives with the department’s Homicide and Internal Affairs units. Sept. 14, 2013 (9:30 p.m.) CMPD Officer Randall Kerrick is charged with voluntary manslaughter. The evidence and investigation revealed that Mr. Ferrell did advance on Officer Kerrick; however the subsequent shooting of Mr. Ferrell was excessive and violated G.S. 14-18 (voluntary manslaughter). The investigation showed that Officer Kerrick did not have the lawful right to discharge his weapon during the encounter. Officer Kerrick turned himself in to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office the same evening. Sept. 14, 2013 Officer Kerrick placed on Unpaid Administrative Leave Oct. 30, 2013 Judge Richard Boner rules that the dash cam video is not a public record and cannot be released before the criminal case against Officer Kerrick is resolved. Jan. 13, 2014 The family of Jonathan Ferrell files a wrongful death civil suit against the City of Charlotte as Officer Kerrick is a city employee. Jan. 21, 2014 Grand jury that was impaneled could not return an indictment. Jan. 28, 2014 Officer Randall Kerrick indicted on a charge of voluntary manslaughter following a grand jury hearing that examined evidence submitted by the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. July 9, 2014 CMPD issues a statement supporting the decision by the Mecklenburg County District Attorney to request the Attorney General’s office to prosecute the case. In its statement, CMPD said “it will fully cooperate by turning over all evidence it collected during the investigation as the department has done in prior cases. The CMPD wants to ensure the community has complete confidence in the integrity and fairness of the judicial process.” May 13, 2015 The City of Charlotte and the family of Jonathan Ferrell reach an agreement on the civil suit filed against the city in the amount of 2.25 million. July 20, 2015 Proceedings in the criminal case against Officer Kerrick are scheduled to begin July 20 in Mecklenburg County court.
