RRA 504 QPH 2 REVISIONS: PVS 35 DATE: PVH 61 MCA 117 Charlotte Douglas SOD 83,744 sf ATTACHMENT C Master Specifications for Meadow Establishment (Section 3) Successful upland meadow establishment depends on three basic factors: Site preparation, good seed-to-soil contact and post-planting maintenance. For all plantings on flat areas or slopes less than 20% gradient, we recommend eradicating and removing existing undesirable vegetation with glyphosate or similar non-selective herbicide that will not impact seed germination. Wait one week after spraying before planting. If perennials or annual weeds have re-emerged at planting time, an additional application of non-selective herbicide can be applied immediately after planting to ensure good control of invasive annuals and perennials. For all plantings on slopes greater than 20% gradient, we recommend leaving the existing erosion control vegetation in place; mow to 8” height. After mowing, mechanically scarify the soil surface with a hard rake, then aerate area to 2” depth (1/2” tine diameter). Prior to planting, evaluate all areas of the site for soil compaction and obtain a soil analysis. To evaluate for compaction, push a piece of rebar or the pointed tip of a tire iron into the soil. The soil is compacted if it does not easily go deeper than 3”. If compacted, we recommend rototilling 1”-2” of well-decomposed compost into the soil. Well-decomposed compost has no recognizable parent material (i.e., leaves, wood chips). The soil should not require lime unless the pH is below 5.5. Do not apply nitrogen fertilizer to your wildflower/grass meadow mix, as nitrogen enhances weed growth. Phosphorus and potassium may be added if the soil test indicates a deficiency of these minerals. Optimal seeding time is after the first fall killing frost or at spring green up. If planting in late fall/early winter, your wildflower seeds will experience conditions that will go through stratification which reduces dormancy levels in the seed, resulting in good germination of flowering species in the first growing season. If planting in the spring, the native grasses and most of the flowers will germinate in the first year, with some of the wildflowers germinating in the second year. Your meadow can be planted by broadcasting (hand or mechanical), drilling or hydro-seeding. Seeds should be planted approximately 1/4”-1/2” deep. For hand and mechanical broadcasting, mix 50 lb. of clay-based kitty litter per acre (43,560 sq. ft.) with your seed prior to planting, dividing this mix and applying half in one direction of passes, then applying the other half in a series of passes that are perpendicular to the first passes. Following broadcasting, use a garden rake or spring-tooth harrow to incorporate the seed into the soil. The seedbed should then be firmed using a cultipacker, lawn roller or ATV tires. For small sites, firm the seedbed by walking on it. Firming the seedbed will ensure good seed-to-soil contact, leading to greater establishment success. Mulch the area with paper mulch cover at a rate that covers approximately half of the soil. ATTACHMENT C If drilling seed, use a no-till drill that is adapted to native seeds (i.e., Truax). It can be useful to mix your meadow seed with 50 lb. of clay-based kitty litter per acre to be seeded. No-till drills incorporate seed into the soil and firm the seedbed. When hydro-seeding, we recommend a two-step application of no more than 500 lb. of mulch per acre as an application marker with the seed and 1,000 lb. of mulch over the top. Generally, hydro-seeding is not followed up with firming the seedbed. During the first growing season after planting, all vegetation should be cut back to a height of 8” when growth reaches 18”-20”. Typically, a planting will need to be trimmed 3-5 times with a string trimmer or 3-point hitch brush hog. Mowing lower than 4” can kill seedlings of some of the species. No trimming should be done after mid-September. Trimming back the growth during the first season reduces weed seed production and allows sunlight to reach the slower-growing, native seedlings. Failure to mow during the establishment year will allow weeds, such as ragweed and foxtail, to smother out the meadow species, causing stand failure. Problem weeds (i.e., burdock, dock, mile-a-minute and thistle) should be removed by mechanical or appropriate chemical means. Before new growth begins in the second and subsequent growing seasons, the meadow should be trimmed to a height of 2”- 4” and the chaff removed to allow faster warming of the soil, which helps the native species compete with weedy species. It also helps to prevent encroachment by woody species. Between the onset of new growth and late-June, problem weeds should be removed by hoeing or spot spraying with an approved herbicide applied by a licensed applicator. Your mix will change with time. Some species are annuals, biennials or short-lived perennials that will be present for one to a few years. Others may be slower to establish, but are long-lived perennials. Some species have lived more than a decade in our production fields.
