THE RÉSUMÉ LOOKBOOK A ONE-STOP SOURCE FOR RESUME SAMPLES Brought to you by the Liberal Arts Career Enrichment Network FOREWORD 2 DEAR LIBERAL ARTS STUDENT, Welcome to the Resume Lookbook! This book provides resume samples and pointers to help you to get started with the process of writing your own resume. Additional resources are available via your Network Symplicity account when you click on the Resources tab. There are some standard “rules” to resume writing, but since we’re all individuals, there is a lot of subjectivity as well. Don’t let that confuse you. At the end of the day, the resume represents your skills and experiences, and you need to be comfortable talking about them when you’re contacted for an interview. Take the advice and suggestions from multiple people and then decide for yourself how you’re most comfortable presenting them in your resume. A few things to remember as you start working on your resume: Keep your reader in mind. Recruiters take about eight seconds to scan resumes. Don’t make them guess about what your experiences have been or the type of position you’re seeking. Provide details about your experiences, including specific outcomes. In other words, avoid “Responsibilities included…” and use more detailed descriptions of what you actually did in a particular job or activity. Your resume tells a story. It tells the story of your educational experiences, work and volunteer experiences, and activities that have contributed to the person you are today. These combined experiences hopefully will tell the story of how you became interested in the position to which you’re applying, so ask yourself if the information you’ve included on your resume is relevant to the opportunity you’re seeking. As long as you are learning and participating in new experiences, your resume will never be done. Many people just want to do their resumes and then not have to look at them again. It doesn’t work that way. As you participate in new experiences, complete new courses, and achieve new goals and objectives, your resume is going to evolve. Keep that in mind and remember to add new things as they happen! I hope this book is helpful to you in writing your resume, and if you need any more help with your resume, your cover letter, your job search etc., don’t hesitate to make an appointment with me or one of my colleagues at the Liberal Arts Career Enrichment Network. BEST OF LUCK, Susan E. Knell Director, Career Enrichment Network Penn State University College of the Liberal Arts CONTENTS FOREWORD 2 GETTING STARTED 4 RESUME SAMPLES BY OBJECTIVE NON-PROFIT/ GOVERNMENT 8 ECONOMICS 12 COMMUNICATIONS 13 MUSEUM 14 MANAGEMENT/ CONSULTING 15 PSYCHOLOGY 16 FOREIGN LANGUAGE 17 EDITING 18 3 GETTING STARTED 4 Is this your first time making a resume? Your first time applying for a job or an internship? Don’t worry– contrary to popular opinion, making a resume can actually be quite fun! A resume tells your story in just one page, and, when you’re done, you will be immensely proud of all that you have accomplished! To help you get started, here’s some tips adapted from a handout given to interns at the Career Enrichment Network. CONTENT CONTACT INFORMATION This is one of the most vital parts of your resume! Without it, you cannot even be offered any of the amazing opportunities for which you are applying! A checklist: • Include the phone number you are most likely to answer. • Include your email address. If your email address is not professional (gummybear92@gmail.com...), either use your PSU address, or, to avoid expiration issues after graduation, make one that uses your name or your initials. THE OBJECTIVE If you ask anyone who hasn’t applied for a job in awhile (Your parents...), they might say that this is outdated. That is, however, far from the truth! Including an objective can really help you to zoom in on a specific position you would like to obtain. It can also be more general, using a time frame (Summer 2012) or skills to be used (communications, writing knowledge, etc.). ! Many of our sample resumes included in this book showcase smart uses of objectives to convey even more interest in the position. EDUCATION • Don’t include high school information unless you are a freshman/firstsemester sophomore or you feel that your resume is empty. • We are THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY not just “Penn State” for the purposes of your resume. • We are located in University Park, PA 16802, not State College. • Include whether you are a B.A. student or a B.S. student. • Instead of putting “Class of...,” put your anticipated graduation month and year. • Study abroad can go under Education! Be sure to list the institution, the timeframe, and some details about your experience. Some employers think of study abroad as a vacation, so be sure to prove the relevance of your experience! (See the next page for Susan’s example...) 5 EDUCATION, CONTINUED • Susan’s study abroad example: University of Sussex, Brighton, England, Spring 2012 Studied abroad on a Penn State exchange program with the University of Sussex, completing upper-level English literature and theatre courses focused on British authors and playwrights. Participated in on-campus student repertory theatre group, performing in two plays during the spring semester. Developed relationships with students from Britain and other European countries, culminating in a broader understanding of British culture, politics, and history. EXPERIENCE • Remember that this covers a wide breadth of things (not all necessarily paid!) and that you can craft a narrative according to the theme of your body of work. • Some possible themes for your Experience section include: Related Experience, Academic Projects, Employment, Work Experience, etc. • Even things you do in your free time, like blogging, can be included! • Whenever you can, quantify! For example, if you were treasurer of an organization, it makes a difference if you were in charge of $50 versus $5000! • Outcomes are also good things to include– such as “implemented a new process that saved x amount of time, money, etc.” ACTIVITIES Include things like: • Student activities • Community volunteer activities • Professional organization membership ! Use category headings like: • Leadership • Campus • Community • Professional Affiliations ! Don’t get caught listing just one activity under a heading! Focusing your ! category can help with this. SKILLS This section is sometimes used in place of an Activities section; it has more of a synthesis aspect to it, and asks, “What did I really learn here?” You can include skills you’ve learned both inside and outside of the classroom. Another new, fresh thing to do is to show your specific software familiarities if you have more than the usual Microsoft Office skill set. Many of our sample resumes demonstrate this. 6 REFERENCES References are not typically listed on a resume because you can use your “real estate” more effectively, and employers really don’t expect to see them here. If you are contacted for an interview, offer a separate sheet of references (with whom you have spoken in advance) at the end of your interview. FORMAT THE CHRONOLOGICAL OPTION In this format, experiences are listed in reverse, meaning that the more recent experiences that you have had appear higher up on your resume. ! THE FUNCTIONAL ROUTE This is an uncommon style for undergraduates, but in this sort of resume, the applicant lists his or her skills under specific headings. In this way, skills are combined from a range of experiences to achieve one categorical goal. ! NUMBER OF PAGES Many college students don’t really need more than one page, but if you find that you have more (vital, completely necessary) experience than you can comfortably fit on one page, you may consider adding a second page. If this is necessary, make sure at least half of page 2 is full to justify this formatting. ! But be careful– this can look pretentious, and therefore the second page is often reserved for CV (Curriculum Vitae) documents instead. In fact, the CV serves the explicit purpose of expanding upon the resume, which, as per its French roots, is just a summary! ! 77 RÉSUMÉ SAMPLES BY OBJECTIVE 8 NON-PROFIT/ GOVERNMENT NOTE ABOUT GPA: IF IT’S BELOW 3.0, CONSIDER USING THE SPACE FOR SOMETHING ELSE ABOUT YOU. EDITING 18 You have a resume, so where do you go next? Even before you have another person read your resume (perhaps at the Career Enrichment Network!), it is always a good idea to seriously revise your own work. Here are some tips adapted from a handout given to interns at the Career Enrichment Network itself! SPACING At the end of the day, it’s your resume, so you can format it at will. However, here are a few conventional standards you may want to adhere to if you are applying for something more traditional. Check: • Is your top margin about 1”? • Is your bottom margin about 0.75? • Is your resume super text-heavy? If so, edit things down or remove some details that are not as crucial • Is there too much white space? If so, brainstorm to add more about yourself and you amazing experiences! • Think about your audience! The resume samples in this book should help you to see how resumes can be changed completely for different purposes. REVIEWERS Have you: • Had at least one person look over your resume? This can be your roommate or your best friend, even! • Had at least one professional look at your resume? Penn State provides you with ample opportunities to do so; try Career Services, any connections you have in your field or one of us at the Career Enrichment Network! • Had at least one older person look at your resume? Unless you know for a fact that you are being recruited by 20-somethings, you want to make sure that your resume does not offend the sensibilities of older professionals who may encounter your resume. Avoid colloquialisms and any sort of slang! FINALLY... ! Remember, this is ultimately a short summary of who you are. Do not let anyone else write your resume for you or leave your document feeling like someone else wrote it for you– this will bite you when you are at your interviews and your physical presence doesn’t match your paper one! Even if it means thinking a little bit outside the box, make sure this document is thoroughly ‘you!’ BOOKLET PUT TOGETHER BY JULIA V. SCHRANK FOR THE LIBERAL ARTS CAREER ENRICHMENT NETWORK
