Notes from the President
Libby Curry, President, Alpha Rho Chapter
As President of the Alpha Rho Chapter of Epsilon
Sigma Phi, I ve had the opportunity to represent our
chapter at national functions. The first opportunity
came in December when I attended the National
Epsilon Sigma Phi Professional Development
Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana. I think this
conference is one of ESPI s best kept secrets.
The focus of this conference was on work and life:
Getting on Track for the 21st Century. I found this to
be an outstanding conference - one our chapter needs
to participate to a greater degree. I found the format
of the conference to be more intimate, which is a
style I prefer. When I speak of intimate, the total
registration for this conference was in the
neighborhood of 350 people versus the 900-1500 you
find at other professional conferences. Normally, it
has about 225, but the Indiana membership turned out
in a big way. One had the opportunity to visit with
many individuals from a wider range of Extension
backgrounds. At one session you might be sitting by
someone who was a new Extension employee and at
dinner you might be sitting by a State Extension
Director.
Kansas own Jim Lindquist, 1999 Second National
Vice President, was the Program Chair for this
national meeting. He and his committee did an
outstanding job of arranging for very interesting
program opportunities.
A variety of subject matter was represented so you
were getting a good cross section of Extension
nationwide. The concurrent sessions were typically
non-subject matter disciplines. They were more
general in nature as professional development
opportunities such as: Reviving Professional
Courtesies; Your Character, My Character, Doesn t
Matter; Office Teamwork to Deliver Extension
Programs; Managing Personal and Professional
Challenges at the Same Time; and Using Change to
Enhance Personal and Professional Life.
The format felt less rushed and less hectic, giving
more time to visit with colleagues from other states.
The membership in Kansas entitled it to two voting
delegates. We lost our right to a voting delegate
because we did not have a second Kansas
representative to attend the business meeting. Voting
delegates receive funds toward their expenses from
the national board. It was too bad that Kansas did not
have a delegate to fill this slot. I would like to
challenge our chapter membership to consider
attending this national conference in the future. I
believe you will each personally gain from this
experience. I would also like to see our chapter not
forfeit a vote in the future. We need to work to get
the word out about this best kept secret.
In February, Roger Terry and I represented the
chapter at the North Central Joint Council of
Extension Professionals (JCEP) in Cedar Rapids,
Iowa. This session gives all the ESPI chapters in the
North Central states the opportunity to come together
to share and exchange ideas and to connect with the
National Board, providing the Board direction for the
total membership.
It is an interesting time to hear what other states are
doing and to see the board work on our behalf to
make a stronger, more viable professional
organization for all of us.
My next opportunity to represent the chapter is the
PILD (Public Issue Leadership Conference) in
Washington, D.C. I m looking forward to this
opportunity and will share with you later.

The Future Proof Leader
Denis Waitley, Epsilon Sigma Phi Annual Conference
keynote speaker, addressed extension professionals
across the country on the topic The Future Proof
Leader ... Effectively Managing Change and Balancing
Professional and Personal Priorities in the Knowledge
Century. Denis shared techniques to help achieve
more satisfaction, success and balance in your personal
and professional lives. Here is a portion of his
comments.
1. Winners look beyond themselves for meaning and
purpose in life.
2. Winners say: What can I do for you?
3. The best companies and individuals always give
more in the quality and amount of service they
render than they expect to receive in dollars.
4. Quality employees pass their quality on to the
customer.
5. Employees want more responsibility, authority and
autonomy.
6. To inspire innovation and creativity, you need to
encourage experimentation and tolerate mistakes.
7. Quality service is the most perishable commodity
in the world.
8. A true incentive program ties rewards to
excellence and quality of effort.
9. A crisis is an opportunity riding on a dangerous
wind.
10. Problems are normal precursors to change.
11. The good old days are here and now.
12. Winning is planting shade trees for others to sit
under.
