OBJECTIVES
Toacceleratepromisingresearchprojectstowardstranslationbyachievingoneormoreofthefollowingvalue-creation
inflectionpoints:
1. Licensingthetechnologytoanestablishedcompany;
2.
Securinganindustrialpartnerandfundingforcontinuedresearchintheframeworkofaresearchalliancewith
industry;or
3.
Formationofastart-upcompany.
PROJECTTYPES
Ø DaedalusFundforInnovationawardsaredesignedtosupportinnovativeresearchactivitiessuchasthoseaimedat
extendingpreliminaryobservations,establishingproof-of-concept,performingpreliminarydrugscreens,scaling-up
atechnologyorprocess,andgenerating(orstrengthening)intellectualpropertypositions.
Ø
Iffeasible,projectsmaybestructuredsuchthatasmallportionofthebudgetedactivitiesmay,withsufficiently
strongjustification,beoutsourcedtoanexternalorganizationsuchasaCRO.
PROGRAMELIGIBILITY
Ø PrincipalInvestigatorswitharesearchportfolioandlaboratoryspacewhosefull-timeemployerisWeillCornell
Medicine.InvestigatorswhomayhaveafacultyappointmenttoWeillCornellMedicinebutwhoarenotfull-time
employeesofWCMarenoteligible.
Ø
NoPImaysubmitmorethanoneproposaltothisRFP.
Ø
Yourproposal/applicationtotheDaedalusFundmustbeapprovedandsignedoffbytheheadofyourlaband/or
yourdepartmentchairman.
FUNDINGANDBUDGETING
Ø Awardsmaybemadeofupto$100,000perproject.
Ø
FundingwillnotbesubjecttoWCMIDCR.
PROJECTDURATION
Ø Projectsshouldbedesignedandstructuredsoastolastbetween6-12months
TERMSANDCONDITIONSOFTHEAWARD
Ø ThePIwillcommithis/hertimeandeffort,asappropriate,toleadandoverseetheproject
Ø
Allintellectualproperty,includingbackgroundpatents,ifany,andanyinventionsmadeinthecourseofperforming
thefundedproject,mustbeassignedtoCornell
Ø
BudgetitemswillnotincludePIsalaryorcapitalequipment
Ø
Ifindustryfundingisobtainedfortheprojectwithintheawardyear,Daedalusfundingmustbereturned.
Ø
Afinalreportwillbeduewithinthirty(30)daysofcompletionoftheproject

Inadditiontothefinalreport,PIsmaybeaskedtoupdatetheDaedalusScientificAdvisoryCommittee(seeProject

Ø ProjectswillbeselectedbyaScientificAdvisoryCommitteeappointedbytheDeancomprisingentrepreneurs,
venturecapitalists,industryleadersandWCMfaculty

Theselectioncriteriawillemphasizethefollowingsuccessfactors,allofwhichshouldbeaddressedinthebodyof
thepre-proposal:
• unmetmedicalneed.
•
highlevelofscientificrigorandvalidity.
•
highlevelofinnovationandnovelty.
•
commercialpotentialandmarketopportunity.
•
thepossibilityofgeneratingnewintellectualpropertyand/orstrengtheningpre-existingintellectualproperty
positions.
•
probabilityofachievingprojectobjectiveswiththeallottedfunding.
•
probabilityofovercomingtechnicalobstaclestoachieveprojectobjectives.
•
cleardelineationofafeasibleR&Droadmap,includingmilestones(i.e.,valuesteps),detailinghowDaedalus
fundingwillhaveanimpactandleadtoasignificantvalue-creationinflectionpoint.
