AEJMC-Lionel C. Barrow Minority Doctoral Student Scholar hip
This $1,200 scholarship is available to minority students (U.S. citizens or permanent residents)
enrolled in a Ph.D. program in journalism and mass communication. All applications materials

Asian American Journalists Association Scholarships
Scholarships ranging from $500 to $5,000 will be awarded to students pursuing careers in print,
photojournalism or broadcast journalism. Applicants may be high school seniors or college
undergraduate or graduate students attending accredited institutions. Awards are based on
involvement or interest in the Asian American community, scholastic achievement, journalistic
ability, a desire to pursue a news media career, and financial need. Scholarship applications must

Asian American Journalists Association Fellowships
Designed to enable AAJA members to attend mid-career short-term advanced journalism
training and advanced skills development programs, these fellowships can be used to defray
tuition, travel, food, lodging and other related program costs. News organizations of the
recipients must grant them a leave of absence to attend the program. Fellowship must be used
within 12 months of the date it is awarded. Quarterly deadlines: March 31, June 30, Sept. 30 and

Chicago Association of Black Journalists Scholarships
Scholarships of $1,000 or more are open to any minority full-time junior, senior or graduate

Chicago Reporter Minority Fellowship In Urban Journalism
An experienced minority journalist will be selected for this year-long fellowship to work at The
Chicago Reporter, an investigative monthly that covers issues of race and poverty in Chicago.

Cox Newspapers Minority Scholarship
Each December a newspaper owned by Cox Enterprises, Inc. is chosen to administer and select a
candidate for this scholarship. This scholarship is directed toward rising high school seniors
graduating the following June from a public school system within the newspaper's primary
circulation area. Applicants must attend a public college within the same area. The scholarship is
awarded to a minority student (Asian American, Hispanic, African American, Native American,
woman or person of color) who is a United States citizen and is pursuing a career in the
newspaper industry. It is awarded during the freshman year and covers tuition, room, board and
books and is renewable for up to four years as long as the student maintains a "B" average.
Approximate value for four years $40,000. The recipient is also provided a paid internship for 20

Dallas-Fort Worth Association of Black Communicators Scholarships
Several scholarships with minimum value of $1,500 each are awarded to high school seniors and
college students. Applicants must be from the Dallas-Fort Worth area only and pursue a career in

Florida Chapter of the Association of Women in Communications Cristina Saralegui Scholarship
This $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a bilingual, female Hispanic communications student
who is a resident of Dade County and is a junior, senior or graduate student with a minimum 3.2
GPA. Preference will be given to applicants attending a Florida college or university.

Investigative Reporters and Editors Minority Conference Fellowships
For minority professional journalists or student journalists who wish to attend IRE's annual
conference, computer-assisted reporting conference, computer boot camps at the University of
Missouri and various regional conferences. Applicants must show financial need, racial and
ethnic diversity, ability and experience. Fellowships cover IRE conference expenses plus a

Joel Garcia Memorial Scholarship
Twenty to 30 $500-$2,000 scholarships are awarded by the California Chicano News Media
Association to Latino college students majoring in any field, but who must be able to prove a
sincere interest in pursuing a career in journalism or mass communication. Scholarships are
awarded based on financial need, community awareness, scholastic achievement and

Judith L. Weidman Racial Ethnic Minority Fellowship
One one-year fellowship from July 1, 2004 through June 30, 2005 with a salary of $30,000 plus
benefits offered by United Methodist Communications. To be eligible the candidate must be a
United Methodist of racial ethnic minority heritage, a recent college or seminary graduate who
has broad communications training, including an understanding [pof effective public relations,

Ken Inouye Scholarship
Offered by the Los Angeles Professional Chapter of SPJ to members of ethnic minorities.
Applicants must be residents of Los Angeles, Ventura or Orange counties or be attending a
college in those counties. Applicants must be declared journalism majors who are juniors,
seniors or graduate students with at least one semester left to complete after the date of the
award. Non-journalism students may apply but must supply a letter by a member in good
standing of SPJ, certifying the student intends to pursue a career in professional journalism;
students in advertising, public relations, publicity or law are not eligible. Scholarship is awarded
based on accomplishments, potential and need. One scholarship of up to $1,000 is awarded each

The Landmark Scholars Program
A minority scholarship-internship program open to college sophomores who want to be
reporters, photographers, graphic artists, sports writers, copy editors or page designers. Scholars
received $10,000 in scholarships, two summer internships and a full-time internship for at least
one year after graduation. Scholars intern at one of three newspapers (The Virginian-Pilot,
Norfolk, The Roanoke (Va.) Times or the News & Record, Greensboro, N.C.) between their
sophomore and junior years and again between their junior and senior years of college. At the
end of each summer, they will be awarded a $5,000 scholarship. After graduation, they return as
a full-time employee for at least one year. Preference is given to students with ties to the MidAtlantic/Southern region, especially, Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland, Washington, D.C.,

Leonard M. Perryman Communications Scholarship for Ethnic Minority Students
One $2,500 scholarship, offered by United Methodist Communications, is awarded to a junior or
senior minority student who intends to pursue a career in religious communications. The
scholarship is limited to members of the United Methodist Church. Scholarship is to be used for
undergraduate study in communications at an accredited institution of higher education in the

MALDEF Communications Scholarhips Fund
The Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) provides financial
support to Latino students enrolled in graduate professional degree programs in communications,
including print and broadcast journalism or electronic communications, as well as students
attending law school specializing in communications or entertainment law. Applicants must
demonstrate involvement with, and commitment to serve the Latino community; show financial
need, and provide proof of academic achievement and potential for completion of a graduate or

Metcalf Institute Diversity Fellowships in Environmental Reporting
This 10-month fellowship will support six minority journalists to study and report on marine and
environmental science. Each fellowship includes a science immersion workshop focusing on
environmental justice, four weeks of independent study with mentorship at the University of
Rhode Island, and 37 weeks working as a reporter covering science and the environment at one
of six news outlets including: Science Friday, NOVA Science Television/NOVA Online, The
Providence Journal, and NPR-member station, WBUR. This fellowship is supported by a grant
from the National Science Foundation and includes a $28,000 stipend to each fellow. These
fellowships are available to six minority journalists with U.S. citizenship who work in print,

Approximately 30 scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 are awarded each academic year
to students interested in pursuing careers in journalism. Scholarships are open to high school

National Press Club Ellen Masin Persina Scholarship
Open to all minority high school seniors who have maintained a 2.75 GPA and are planning to
pursue a career in journalism. The $20,000 grant ($5,000 per year for four years) may be used at
the college of the recipient’s choice and is renewable for up to four years if a 2.5 GPA is
maintained. To apply, a student must send an application and a one-page essay on why he/she

Native American Journalists Association Scholarships
Several scholarships, from $1,000 to $3,000, will be awarded to Native American students
pursuing degrees in journalism. Applicants must send cover letter stating financial need, area of
interest (print, broadcast, photojournalism, new media, journalism education), reasons for
pursuing a career in journalism and plans for after college; two copies of school transcripts; three
letters of recommendation from an academic advisor, counselor or a professional individual
familiar with your background and abilities; work samples (if available); and proof of enrollment

New York Association of Black Journalists/Stephen H. Gayle Memorial Scholarship
Graduate students, college students or graduating high school seniors who are permanent
residents of New York City, Long Island or Westchester or attending school in New York City,
Long Island or Westchester and planning careers in journalism are eligible for one of several
scholarships valued up to $2,500. Applicants must write a 500-750 word essay related to an issue

The News-Sentinel Minority Scholarship

Newspaper Association of America Minority Fellowship Program
Funds to pay for travel, lodging and training fees will be provided to minority newspaper
employees or members of journalism faculties to attend newspaper-related training conferences
and seminars. Fellowships are awarded twice a year-June and December. Approximately 25
fellows are selected each year. Students are not eligible though occasional exceptions are made
for graduate students with some professional experience. This program is funded by the NAA.

Newspaper Association of America New Media Fellowships
Fellowships are offered to women and minority newspaper professionals from all departments.
Over the course of the year-long program, fellows develop a working knowledge of new media
and its relevant applications in the newspaper industry. Fellows receive training from NAA to
develop and implement a new-media project that will include the creation and maintenance of a
World Wide Web page and site, and write a column for NAA's Digital Edge. Applicants must
show a desire to better understand the new-media environment, demonstrate an understanding of

Ohio Newspapers Foundation Journalism Scholarships
Three $1,000 scholarships are offered to minority students graduating from Ohio high schools
planning to pursue journalism careers. Applicants must have a minimum 2.5 GPA in high school
and demonstrate writing ability and plan to attend an Ohio college or university. All application
materials must be postmarked by March 30; scholarships awarded following verification of

Rollan D. Melton Fellowship

South Asian Journalist Association (SAJA) Scholarship
SAJA offers three scholarships to students who are serious about pursuing a journalism career
and are of South Asian descent (includes Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan
and Sri Lanka; Indo-Caribbeans are also eligible). Scholarships are: one $1,000 scholarship to a
high school senior, one $1,000 scholarship to a college student, and one $1,500 scholarship to a

William A Brower Scholarship
A $1,500 scholarship for minority college students from northwest Ohio or those attending
college in northwest Ohio who plan to pursue a journalism or mass communications career. For

Scholarships
Annually, NABJ awards more than $60,000 in scholarships to deserving students interested in
pursuing careers in journalism. Scholarships are worth up to $25,000. Scholarships are open to
any foreign or American born student, currently attending or entering an accredited four-year
college/university in the U.S. or those who are candidates for graduate school.
General Requirements
All applicants must be a student member of NABJ. All applicants must be a journalism major or
pursuing a career in journalism. All applicants MUST send FOUR complete packets which
include application form, resume, essays,transcripts, and work samples for each packet. All
applicants must be enrolled in an accredited college or university and have at least one year of
school remaining. Awards will be granted for the 2008-2009 school year. Previous NABJ
scholarship winners are not eligible to reapply. Some awards include additional requirements.

The National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) offers several scholarships through our
Rubén Salazar Scholarship Fund program. These scholarships are designed to encourage and
assist Latino students pursue careers in journalism. Hispanics remain woefully underrepresented
in mainstream U.S. newsrooms. One of NAHJ’s goals is to help more qualified Hispanic
students to move from the classroom to the newsroom. NAHJ offers scholarships to college
undergraduates and graduate students pursuing careers as print, photo, broadcast or online
journalism.
You must plan to attend a college or a university as a full-time student for the entire academic
year in order to be eligible for an NAHJ scholarship. Only students who attend or plan to attend
schools within the United States or Puerto Rico are eligible for NAHJ’s scholarships.
