Cox Newspapers Minority Scholarship Each December a newspaper owned by Cox Enterprises, Inc. is chosen to administer and select a candidate for this scholarship. This scholarship is directed toward rising high school seniors graduating the following June from a public school system within the newspaper's primary circulation area. Applicants must attend a public college within the same area. The scholarship is awarded to a minority student (Asian American, Hispanic, African American, Native American, woman or person of color) who is a United States citizen and is pursuing a career in the newspaper industry. It is awarded during the freshman year and covers tuition, room, board and books and is renewable for up to four years as long as the student maintains a "B" average. Ken Inouye Scholarship Offered by the Los Angeles Professional Chapter of SPJ to members of ethnic minorities. Applicants must be declared journalism majors who are juniors, seniors or graduate students with at least one semester left to complete after the date of the award. The Landmark Scholars Program A minority scholarship-internship program open to college sophomores who want to be reporters, photographers, graphic artists, sports writers, copy editors or page designers. Scholars received $10,000 in scholarships, two summer internships and a full-time internship for at least one year after graduation. Scholars intern at one of three newspapers (The Virginian-Pilot, Norfolk, The Roanoke (Va.) Times or the News & Record, Greensboro, N.C.) between their sophomore and junior years and again between their junior and senior years of college. At the end of each summer, they will be awarded a $5,000 scholarship. After graduation, they return as a full-time employee for at least one year. Metcalf Institute Diversity Fellowships in Environmental Reporting This 10-month fellowship will support six minority journalists to study and report on marine and environmental science. Each fellowship includes a science immersion workshop focusing on environmental justice, four weeks of independent study with mentorship at the University of Rhode Island, and 37 weeks working as a reporter covering science and the environment at one of six news outlets including: Science Friday, NOVA Science Television/NOVA Online, The Providence Journal, and NPR-member station, WBUR. This fellowship is supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation and includes a $28,000 stipend to each fellow. These fellowships are available to six minority journalists with U.S. citizenship who work in print, broadcast or electronic media. The fellowship begins in September 2006. These scholarships are designed to encourage and assist Latino students pursue careers in journalism. Hispanics remain woefully underrepresented in mainstream U.S. newsrooms. One of NAHJ’s goals is to help more qualified Hispanic students to move from the classroom to the newsroom. NAHJ offers scholarships to college undergraduates and graduate students pursuing careers as print, photo, broadcast or online journalism. You must plan to attend a college or a university as a full-time student for the entire academic year in order to be eligible for an NAHJ scholarship.
