Dr. Derek Lutterbeck Deputy Director, Holder of the Swiss Chair and Lecturer in International History Dr. Derek Lutterbeck joined MEDAC in 2006 as Deputy Director and Holder of the Swiss Chair. Previously he was at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP). He has also worked as a consultant for the Geneva Centre for Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF), the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD), and the International Labour Organisation (ILO). Derek Lutterbeck earned a Masters and Ph.D in Political Science from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva (HEID), as well as a Masters Degree in Law from the University of Zürich. In 1999, he was awarded the Prix Arditi in International Relations from the Arditi Foundation in Geneva. In recent years, his research has focused primarily on migration as well as security and security sector reform issues in the Euro-Mediterranean region. His teaching interests also include 20th century international history. He has published articles in journals such as Armed Forces and Society, Mediterranean Politics, Mediterranean Quarterly, the Journal of North African Studies, Contemporary Security Policy, European Security, Sicherheit und Frieden, Cooperation and Conflict, and the European Journal of International Relations.
