About the Career
Special Note
Medical Assistants are Certified Nursing
Assistants who have completed an approved
training program and have received additional
certification to administer medications and
perform nonsterile treatments in a Skilled Nursing
Care Facility in Wisconsin, following the policies
and procedures of their organization. They
perform the delegated function of medication
administration under the supervision of a
registered nurse. Routes of administration include
oral; topical; eye, ear, and nose drops; vaginal;
rectal; transdermal; and oral inhalers.
Applicants need to have recommendations from
their current employer and have a minimum of
2,000 hours as a Certified Nursing Assistant with
at least 40 hours working with the residents who
students will work with during clinical
experience.

Program Goals
Upon completion of the program, the graduate
will be able to:

30510395 Medication Assistant
...prepares experienced nursing assistant, current on the
Federal Nursing Assistant Directory, to administer
medications to residents of a Skilled Care Nursing
Facility. The scope of the course covers the role of the
Medication Assistant, legalities of medication
administration, control and storage of drugs, techniques
of administering drugs, and record keeping. The
combination of lecture/discussion classes, practice labs,
and clinical experience also covers drug actions and
impact on body systems, utilization of drug reference
materials, and recognition of drug side effects. Qualifies
the graduate for inclusion in the State of Wisconsin
Nursing Assistant Directory as trained and approved to
administer medications.
