2004 WUI Community Assistance Grant Applications:
A Quick Profile
The National Fire Plan interagency community assistant grants team received 142 grant
applications on or before February 21st, 2003 requesting a total of $23,843,952. Of those,
11 of the applications (representing $1,115,037 of the requests) were ineligible; letters
were sent encouraging the 11 applicants to partner with other organizations in their
communities to develop viable grant projects for the 2005 grant cycle.
Interagency working groups composed of representatives from BLM, FS, F&W, BIA,
NPS, Oregon Department of Forestry, Washington Department of Natural Resources,
U.S. Department of Energy, OSU Forest Products extension, Oregon Economic
Community Development Department, Oregon and Washington State Fire Marshals’
offices, and regional non-profit organizations reviewed the remaining 131 grant
applications in each of four project categories:
WUI Fuels Treatments - 62 applications requesting
Prevention and Education – 23 applications requesting
Planning and Monitoring – 27 applications requesting

The grants team met on March 20th to discuss projects ranked by each working group and
to finalize its funding recommendations, developing a list of 50 projects recommended
for funding in the 2004 fiscal year. We will not know whether these projects can actually
be funded until the Bureau of Land Management and Forest Service learn their 2004
budget numbers – no earlier than fall 2004.
The following is a list of the 50 proposed projects that the grants team recommends for
funding in fiscal year 2004:
