DM Practicum: Some Guidance on Letter of Enquiry/Introduction: There is no set template for a letter of enquiry or request to do a practicum. Situations vary too much. I think the best idea would be to ask your colleagues if they wrote a successful letter and if they could share it with you. A key early step is to initiate the process informally with an organization or person that/whom you may have some contact, or respond to an opportunity like the ones that come across on listserves. If possible visit or call or skype the key person. And then address the letter to that person In your letter, the key points are: but you should adapt as you see fit to explain you are a second year MSDM student pointing out that this is a professional degree for students who have experience in development with a clear focus on management broadly defined. Then explain that the Practicum is the capstone of the degree. Note it is not an internship nor a research assignment although research might be involved. The idea is that you accomplish or try to accomplish a task that is realistic and useful -- really useful for and in the interests of, the organization. The organization, together with you, will determine such a task. Stress that it is intended to be helpful for the organization. You can mention that you will be willing to help in other ways but you will need time and support to focus on the task. Also mention your experience and make sure to mention some of your skills you have gained through experience and courses and skills institutes at AU or elsewhere (don’t mention the name of the courses but rather the skills) - this includes management, evaluation, logframes, stakeholder analysis, research skills, IT, computer skills, .... – don’t overstate, but don’t be modest. Reassure them that you are comfortable and effective and have experience in working in teams and in multicultural situations; also that you are adaptable and can work on your own if necessary If language is relevant note that you have the language (if you do). Be very polite Good Luck David
