CONSTRUCTING A NEW CAMPUS ENVIRONMENT During 2003-2004, NJIT completed the first phase of its $83.5 million construction program, with the opening of the East Building, housing the Albert Dorman Honors College, the Department of Biomedical Engineering, and administrative offices, as well as the first phase of the New Campus Center. The piazza between the East Building and the Campus Center has become a popular warm-weather meeting place. Expanded facilities for the Albert Dorman Honors College are house in the East Building. A gleaming new cafeteria with a high-tech design scheme is one of the most popular amenities in the new center. The new center houses improved venues for student activities, such as WJTB, NJIT’s student-run radio station. ATHLETIC ENHANCEMENTS Under new Coach Pedro Lopes, NJIT’s men’s soccer team is preparing for full Division I status in fall 2005. They will kick off the 2004 season with a newly refurbished field featuring professional grade artificial grass and a schedule of Division I competition. Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium in Newark became the new home field for NJIT’s baseball team under an agreement with the Newark Bears of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. KEEPING UP APPEARANCES Despite the temporary obstacles created by the construction program, students manage to find a place on campus for a little fun. Landscaping was a high priority for the ad hoc committee on campus appearance convened by President Altenkirch last year.
