Postgraduate Certificate in Education (P.G.C.E.) Courses
commencing in October 2015
The Teaching Areas on offer in teacher education programmes are as follows.
Areas followed as single subjects are indicated accordingly; other areas are offered as double subjects but the
following combinations of teaching areas from Group A are not normally offered: Art and French; English and Music
Studies; Geography and either Maltese or Religious Education; German and History; Maltese and Religious Education.

Prospective applicants are required to apply for University courses by the deadline of 23rd July 2015.

1. Numbers indicate the maximum number of students that can be accepted according to the number of
available Teaching Practice placements as provided to the faculty by the school authorities.
2. Entry into the B.Ed. (Hons) and P.G.C.E courses is based on qualifications. If the number of fully
qualified applicants exceeds the number of students that can be accepted in particular teaching areas,
applicants will be placed in rank order according to criteria approved by Senate. Interviews for selection
of applicants will be held (normally during the 1st week of September) where there is a tie for any
remaining place/s in a teaching area.

For the purpose of selection, applicants who are fully qualified by 31st August 2015 (including being in
possession of the special entry requirements for the course, and having submitted the Proficiency
Test/s, and European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) Standard Certificate or Logbook for the B.Ed.
(Hons), and European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) Standard Certificate or Logbook for the P.G.C.E
course) will be considered first and will be placed in rank order.
4.1 If, after the first ranking referred to in paragraph 3, vacant places are still available in the B.Ed. (Hons)
and P.G.C.E. courses, applicants who become fully qualified (including being in possession of the Special
Entry Requirements for the course) after the 31st August 2015 and before 30th September 2015 (or
later if MATSEC results are not published by this date), shall be considered for selection to take up any
remaining places.
4.2 On acceptance on the course, applicants will also be asked to submit an original Police Certificate of
Conduct (not more than 6 months old) to the Faculty of Education.
4.3 B.Ed. (Hons) applicants who are not in possession of a pass in ALL 7 ECDL modules and/or who do not
pass the English proficiency test (and Maltese proficiency test for B.Ed. (Hons) Primary and B.Ed. (Hons)
ECEC mature applicants and holders of MCAST-BTEC Higher National Diploma in Advanced Studies in
Early Years) by Friday 25th September 2015 (or as shall be announced if MATSEC results are not
published by this date) will not be admitted to the course. Applicants shall be exempted from sitting for
the proficiency tests if they are in possession of a SEC pass at grade 3 or higher, or an Intermediate
Matriculation level pass at grade C or higher or an Advanced Matriculation level pass at Grade C or
higher in English and/or Maltese, as applicable.
4.4 P.G.C.E. applicants who are not in possession of a pass in ALL 7 ECDL modules by Friday 25th
September 2015 will not be admitted to the course.
5. In the case of English language, passes at Grade B or better in the GCE examination at Ordinary Level
will also be accepted.
