UCL Student Support and Wellbeing STUDY ABROAD Promoting Student Mobility Opportunities Why student mobility? Spending time overseas offers exposure to a different cultural and academic environment, and can be both challenging and rewarding. In particular, recent research by the British Council has indicated that growth in interpersonal skills, especially intercultural understanding, is the most important impact of time spent overseas, even for short periods. Students also report positive effects on employability, independence and commitment to studies. What opportunities are available? UCL has exchange agreements with over 250 institutions in 40 countries across five continents. The majority of mobility opportunities for UCL students are offered through a structured period of study as part of their undergraduate degree. To find out if your department offers this kind of mobility, please see overleaf. Opportunities for post graduate study abroad are limited, but research students may be interested in carrying out part of their work at one of UCL’s partner institutions. Details of existing partnerships covering are held at department level – if you are interested in finding out more, you can contact the Study Abroad Tutor in your department, or your Head of Department if there is no Study Abroad Tutor. What support is available for students? Undergraduate students on a period of Study Abroad are supported by the UCL Study Abroad Team, part of UCL Student Support and Wellbeing. Our job is to support outgoing Study Abroad students throughout their application, preparation and time away. Students can get in touch with us by email at studyabroad@ucl.ac.uk, by phone on 0207 679 0121 (9am-5pm weekdays) or by popping to the Student Centre during our Office Hours, 2pm-4pm on Tuesday afternoons. Further information on support can be found on our website: www.ucl.ac.uk/studyabroad. How can we promote these opportunities? Departments offering Study Abroad opportunities as an optional part of a student’s degree programme are encouraged to promote these to students as early as possible, including during induction sessions. Research has shown that one of the key barriers to students going abroad is simply a lack of awareness that opportunities exist. Simply mention the programme, give them details of the website and encourage them to talk to their Study Abroad Tutor.
