GENERAL PURPOSE:
This policy is intended to provide a process and procedure that will insure the full
compliance with U.S. Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services (BCIS)
requirements for schools hosting nonimmigrant students under the Student and
Exchange Visitor Programs.
POLICY:
It is the policy of MJI that all accepted nonimmigrant foreign students will be enrolled in
the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), and Michigan Jewish
Institute will comply with all nonimmigrant foreign student status reporting requirements
via this electronic database.
PROCESS:
In addition to meeting all admission and registration requirements displayed in the
Michigan Jewish Institute Academic Catalog (this includes a completed Application for
Admission and the completion of the appropriate registration form for each semester),
we require the following of nonimmigrant foreign students wishing to be considered for
acceptance and enrollment:



A completed Addendum to Application for Admission
Financial documentation to substantiate that there will be sufficient funds
available for educational and living expenses while attending MJI
If the applicant has already been admitted to the U.S, a copy of the I-94 entry
document
All MJI nonimmigrant foreign students will be enrolled in the Student and Exchange
Visitor Information System (SEVIS), and Michigan Jewish Institute will comply with all
nonimmigrant foreign student status reporting requirements via this electronic database.
Following receipt of all the above information, a decision to accept the student into an

MJI program will result in issuing an acceptance letter and the creation of a SEVIS I-20
form. A printed SEVIS I-20 form will be created for the student and signed by the
Designated School Official (and by the student). A signed paper copy of the I-20 will be
kept on file at MJI. (Please note: It is the student’s responsibility to retain their printed
and signed SEVIS I-20.
Any change in student status must be immediately reported to the Designated School
Official. This includes but is not limited to:
 Failure to register for at least 12 credit hours of classes
 Reduction of course-load below 12 credit hours of classes
 Planned departure from the U.S.
 A request for a leave of absence
 Three or more absences from any course of instruction
 Unsatisfactory progress
 Student request for employment authorization (after completing one full
academic year or due to documented economic hardship)
 School transfer request
 Request to Reinstate student status
 Final semester prior to graduation
 Student leaving our academic program
