ב"ה MICHIGAN JEWISH INSTITUTE Policy and Procedure Manual Functional Area: Title: RECORDS MANAGEMENT Policy No. RM 1155 Catalog Rights Effective Date: September 1, 2006 Page No. 1 of 2 GENERAL PURPOSE: This policy is intended to provide a process and procedure that will insure the appropriate use of MJI Academic Catalog and Student Handbook in determining students’ curricula and curricula completion requirements. U U POLICY: It is the policy of MJI that students’ academic requirements within any particular curriculum and or program concentration are determined by the MJI Academic Catalog and Student Handbook in effect at the time of initial enrollment. However, some alternative catalog arrangements are possible, as specifically defined in the PROCESS section provided next. U U All MJI employees will be oriented on this policy and procedure and will make it part of their records management activities. PROCESS: 1. MJI programmatic requirements are determined according to the catalog in effect at the time of first enrollment. If enrollment is in any credit course, is continuous and at least one course is taken during each twelve month period (i.e. no breaks in enrollment as defined by the MJI Breaks in Enrollment Policy and Procedure), then graduation requirements are taken from the MJI Academic Catalog and Student Handbook in effect at the time of initial enrollment. U U 2. Students who change their academic program or concentration must meet the catalog requirements for the new program or concentration in effect at the time the change is made. 3. When a break in enrollment occurs (as defined by the MJI Breaks in Enrollment Policy and Procedure), graduation requirements are determined according to the catalog in effect at the time of reenrollment. However, students who were eligible to Revised: Printed February 10, 2013 ב"ה MICHIGAN JEWISH INSTITUTE Policy and Procedure Manual Functional Area: Title: RECORDS MANAGEMENT Policy No. RM 1155 Catalog Rights Effective Date: September 1, 2006 Page No. 2 of 2 continue at MJI at the time of leaving (i.e., were compliant with all their Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements) may elect to continue toward graduation under the requirements of the catalog in effect at the time of initial enrollment. 4. With permission from the Dean of Academic Administration, students may choose to graduate under the catalog in effect at the time of the petition to graduate. However, under no circumstances will students be permitted to “mix and match” requirements from different catalogs. Likewise, students may not complete general education requirements under one catalog and concentration/major requirements under another catalog. 5. If a student requests graduation under a catalog that is over seven years old, MJI may determine that the requirements of the old catalog are no longer “current” in the marketplace and therefore reflect poorly on MJI’s academic and instructional quality. In such cases, MJI may require the student to meet the requirements of the then current catalog in effect. Students may appeal such a decision using then current MJI appeals processes in effect. 6. MJI reserves the right to issue and require immediate compliance with any new and specific catalog requirements as may be needed to respond to certification, licensure and accreditation issues. When this occurs, said changes will apply retroactively to all catalogs under which active students may be proceeding to graduation. The balance of those past catalog requirements will remain unchanged.
