Job Summary: The Interim VPR will serve as a member of the President’s cabinet and be responsible for encouraging and facilitating
research activities across the university’s colleges and research centers and will lead university-wide strategic research growth activities.
The Interim VPR will report directly to the President and have administrative responsibility for the Office of Research and Sponsored
Programs, Pre-Award Services, the University Research Compliance Office, the Comparative Medicine Group, and the K-State
Postdoctoral Association. The Biosecurity Research Institute, the National Agricultural Biosecurity Center, the Biotechnology Core
Facility, and the Electronics Design Laboratory will report to the Interim VPR.

Responsibilities:
Current K-State tenured faculty members (Associate or Full
Professors) with strong research credentials will be considered
for the position. The ideal candidate will have had
administrative experience with a unit such as an academic
department or research center; possess leadership skills and
the capacity to work well with departments, college deans,
business leaders and government agencies at all levels; and
demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills.
The Interim VPR will serve as the university’s Chief Research
Officer, providing leadership and expertise in fostering a
campus environment that promotes collaborative,
interdisciplinary efforts and produces high quality research.
The position reports directly to the President. The Interim VPR
will be responsible for encouraging and facilitating the
integration and enhancement of research activities across the
university’s colleges and multiple research centers and will lead
university-wide strategic research growth activities. In addition,
the Interim VPR will provide leadership for the acquisition of
research funding, the planning and development of academic
research space, patenting, commercialization, the incubation of
new companies and recruiting of corporate research partners,
and public outreach.
It is preferred that the selected candidate be available to spend
approximately ten (10) hours per week during December 2015
working with the current VPR to smooth the transition. The
expectation is that the Interim VPR will serve in the role for the
remainder of FY 2016 or until a new permanent VPR is hired in
the concurrently running search. Application for the position of
or appointment as Interim VPR will not preclude an individual
from consideration for the permanent VPR position.

How to Apply:
The Interim VPR Search Committee invites letters of
nomination or applications (letter of interest, curriculum vitae,
and contact information for at least three references) to be
submitted as soon as possible. Review of materials will begin
on November 9, 2015 with interviews to take place during
November. Appointment is expected by December 9, 2015.
The Interim VPR will have administrative responsibility for units
that support research infrastructure as well as interdisciplinary
research facilities and research support facilities. The Interim
VPR also will serve on state, regional, and national committees
directed to the promotion and support of research; and help
facilitate technology transfer and economic development
activities of the university.
The Interim VPR will leverage established and innovative
approaches to help faculty successfully compete for large
federal, corporate and foundation grants. In cooperation with
individual colleges, the Office identifies grant opportunities and
provides assistance in the preparation of major grant
applications. The Office plays an important role in assisting
faculty and students to develop appropriate policies and
procedures for centers and institutes within the university. The
Office is responsible for selecting candidates for faculty
fellowships and research awards where a limited number of
applications can go forward from the university.
